Bumblefoot - Calling All Crunchy Natural Folks

As everyone can see we are on the side of a mt. so we'll have to lift up the one side but not too bad considering. It will be barn red when painted My dear son built this i was go for. We got busy and built a shelter for the geese this afternoon so my ladies have to wait till tomorrow. The shelter is just for day time when I have to put them in time out in their fence when they are being mean to the ducks. So my girls have to wait another day i am pooped. So glad to hear Jo is doing better that is awesome..
Wow, that looks great! When I see people get stuff like that done in one day I am amazed, because we are in a season of life when one small thing takes a whole weekend (lots of toddler "help" and a fully-dependent newborn). Love your surroundings - I sure would love to live in the mountains. We live on the plains so dirt and sky is our scenery. Awesome sunrises/sunsets, though. When my DH gets home this evening we are going to treat Jo again. When I just went out there to get them situated for the day I noticed Jo prancing around like a little pony - he seems to be totally back to normal! But we'll see tonight if that scab comes off and what we have to deal with underneith. I was thinking, your hen with the pockets in her feet, she must have had a pretty bad case to have been left with those!

Something must be working for him to be acting so spry. Hopefully you'll get the scab off. I worked on my hen with the wrapped foot this place is hard so no wonder it hurts to walk on it. So I cleaned it good spread clear iodine all over and re wrapped, she grumbled the whole time. Guess that's why they are called biddy's lol So I am still working on one too, Now it has started to rain so Liz will have to wit till I can get her after outside chores. She is my laid back Brahma hen and so gentle I don't hear one word out of her plus she is use to this.

Hope you have some good news with Jo this evening as far as getting the scab off. ,

Since we're retired we take things slow but my son is off 4 days during the week so I can get him pretty motivated he loves to build And the best plus was all free materials.

Hahaha I forgot that I've heard chickens referred to as "biddys" before. :D

Today I've seen several posts on a colorado chickens facebook page I'm a part of with people saying they are dealing with Bumblefoot - must be from the groundcovers drying up and getting rough now that we're entering autumn. Everyone is thinking, though, that they have to do the surgery - thanks to all I've learned here I've been able to recommend a good alternative to those interested.

That's awesome you have your son's help. How did you get all that free? Is that wood from pallets?

I do have a "papoose", but I only know how to wrap a baby on to my front - need to master a back carry so I can do a lot more with my arms!

Good for you and now your experienced. I cannot imagine putting my duck, chicken through the pain of cutting. When there is an alternative. We just have to be patient and let the Epsom salt and clear iodine work it's magic.

A couple years ago My son built my geese a house and some of our good friends donated material they had laying around, the wood is popular boards the metal roof was donated by another friend left over from a project and we even had windows donated for the goose house where my son was working on redoing a home and they replaced all the window so we got windows free. double hung too. On the goose house I had to by vinyl flooring and hardware cloth and 2X4 for framing that was it and paint. and still have boards left over. Maybe i can think of another project or 2. lol and when my dh finishes his shed for the tractor he is going to build me a replica of an out house for my rakes.pitch forks etc. complete with half moon. I have always wanted an out house[not to use] just to have for storage. I have been in an out house at my Aunts. I am very glad for in door plumbing.

Well we just finished uo with Jo tonight. No wonder he was prancing around - the scab came off by itself! But I didn't realize that until after I started soaking him in the epsom solution and he was fighting extra hard because: salt on an open wound once again! Oopsie. Do you still keep soaking the foot with epsom regularly even after the scab comes off, or just clean it? And still use the iodine every couple days? The spot looks good - looks like fresh new skin but probably tender and sensitive. Put him in a boot so he won't get it all nasty steppin' in poo and such. Hopefully he won't Houdini his way out of this one.

And we had a lot of poop to clean off the kitchen floor once we were done this time - AND off my bare feet. :sick

Wow you guys are crafty! We keep all kinds of stuff in hopes that we'd someday repurpose it for something fabulous, but so far we are just looking like junk hoarders. At least we have it all hidden behind the garage. :) I love the outhouse idea!!

WOOOT!

Time to switch up the treatment. At this point, I would just try to keep the foot clean(ish), and spray a few times daily with something very mild. You might try mild saline solution, or Vetericyn, or antibiotic cream - you seem to have a good intuition about this...

I would stop with the iodine.

Is it bad that I put iodine on his foot tonight? Hope not :/

For something mild I may just use coconut oil unless you think I'd need something more. It is a natural antibiotic/antiviral/antiseptic that isn't agressive. It sure makes great diaper rash "cream" :D

Yes just use the coconut oil that will work fine. Great news the scab came off on it's own.. Shouldn't take too long now for it to heal the rest of the way. Was the hole very deep? Honestly I doubt the ES water hurt. they use saline solutions to clean and heal wounds all the time.

Poop on floor and feet is pretty common here to, good thing we can take these things in stride. lol

As for material to repurpose it's always good to have it especially when the chicken/duck/ geese etc math get the best of us. lol
