Bumblefoot - Calling All Crunchy Natural Folks

My iodine came yesterday! Gonna check out his foot and treat him again in a few minutes.

Hahaha Opie sounds like a special fella! That must be him in your picture? I love their personalities; they're definitely a much calmer, friendlier temperament than our khakis. How many eggs do you usually get per day? And they stop laying through wintertime, right? So funny, those girls of yours are really convined they have ONE purpose in life haha! Can't wait to see ours hatch & mother some babies hopefully next year.
Are you going to get a Muscovy drake at some point because once your Muscovy's hatch ducklings from you KC drake those ducklings will be sterile. in case your wanting duckling galore. lol Oh Opie is one stinker.

I just treated my hen again this morning and was surprised the swelling hadn't gone down any so I cleaned it up and spread the iodine all over then re wrapped.
Hope you see improvement pretty quick after starting the clear iodine.

Yes mine have stopped laying for the year and won't start back till early spring. When the days start getting longer.

We are just planning on hatching more khakis by slipping their eggs under the muscovy girls. We probably will be interested, at some point, to have a male muscovy so we can hatch some of those too.

Our drake struggled a lot more than usual this time during soaking and treatment - I couldn't figure out why he was fighting so hard this time; biting me all up and down my arm and kicking the soaking dish around - until I noticed his claw coming off on his spur. And I realized it was my fault; I had wrapped too high when I wrapped him and got is spur in there which probably held it awkward and made it rub so that it started coming off. Then I go and put salt on his wound! Poor guy, I feel so bad. He ended up pulling it all the way off with his mouth. Thankfully it didn't bleed, just seeped on the surface a little. I made sure to stay below it when I wrapped him this time.

THEN as soon as we let him down outside he jumped in the duck pool - which we have covered with tarp right now, but some water was sitting on top of the tarp. So his wrap got all soaked right away. I'm afraid it got the cardboard and cotton wet inside and now it will just fester bacteria until we re-do the wrap, but I won't be able to get to him until tomorrow

Oh and the plug/scab still wasn't ready to come off. Hopefully the clear iodine will speed up the process now. Overall, though, I feel like we took a couple steps backward with this round lol

It happens when keeping critters. Hopefully everything is be okay till tomorrow. Poor guy, it's hard to wrap these things feet isn't it. lol I think harder to wrap a duck than a chicken . i was surprised my hens bumble didn't look better after I was able to get the scab off already. Working with these guys requires patience that's for sure.

Yes it is very hard to wrap them! My husband and I were saying we almost need a third person. AND i just looked out the window to find that he somehow alrady got the wrap off - what the?! How?! I guess getting it that wet loosened it up enough. Well it's a good thing that scab hasn't come off yet then, huh? Oi... yes we need much patientce and perseverence to help these critters. Definitely learning that!

Hope your hen's swelling goes down soon! Have you ever lost one to an injury or a predator? We haven't had to deal with that yet thank goodness.

Thankfully haven't lost any of my water fowl to a predator, some of my chickens have gone over the fence and didn't come home. Lost 2 ducks to egg laying problems and the 3 to old age A few chickens to astites probably spelled wrong.[water belly] and one to what we think was heart problems and 1 roo to gape worms.treated him but used the wrong wormer.

Do you have chickens too? geese on your list?

We'll have to call your drake Houdini ..Does he have a name? I bet the water loosened the vet wrap up. If you have a TSC close by I'd go there for vet wrap, this stuff is made for horses I cut it down the middle but it will stay on for as long as you need it too. So now he also need new shoes. lol

The two ducks you lost to egg-laying problems; was it soft shell/egg bound problems? Our three khaki girls are new layers, only have been laying for about a month, and we are seeing soft shell eggs every few days or so. They get plenty oyster shell, crushed egg shells, and good nutrition... maybe they're still just getting established? It makes me nervous though because I know they can get egg-bound.

We don't have chickens but we might someday. We prefer ducks so far because they are more hardy and good foragers. We'd love to have geese but they're kinda loud - don't want tiny kids being woke up from naps :)

I actually did use the vet wrap. It worked wonderfully the first time, but this time with him getting it wet and me being worried about irritating his spur i don't think it was secure enough. :/

Oh and yes he does have a name - it's Jo. Which is a tamed-down version of JoeyLaDragonBoo... the original courtesy of our 4 yr old daughter :p
Houdini is starting to sound pretty fitting though, haha

Soft shells happen when ducks are just starting up too. You can offer kale chopped up which is another good source of calcium.

My ducks just acted off like she wasn't feeling good. I wasn't sure if she was egg bound but just to be on the safe side I brought her in and made her a nice bedroom in the downstairs bathroom let her soak in the tub in nice warm water off and on all day, she would drink but wouldn't eat. not even meal worms this was on a sat. Sunday morning she laid and egg it was normal in every way but she still wasn't acting right by night she died. I am not sure if she was internally laying or if she had an infection they hide illness from us so well they are about gone sometimes before you know their sick. This one was 2 when she died.

My older duck was 7 and had just about the same symptoms..
