"p.s. made the chestnut cake finally it was delicious" Yay! I was wondering about that. I am theoretically getting 18 lbs of sweet cherries today. We will see if they are okay or iffy.
I spent about three hours turning over and leveling out last years potato rows. We never got to do that last fall and it was so freaking wet and cold when we were harvesting that it got shelved until this year and then the spring was so freaking wet.... Anyway, it is generally leveled back out and I planted some millet grain and we'll see what happens. Either we will get some grain or we will have some green compost by the time this season is over. Time to get back out to choreland!

@whoop whoop , glad to hear the chestnut cake was good!

@Mtn Margie , what kind of potatoes have you grown? We've had good success with the white and red ones here. Now we're trying sweet potatoes, should know in another couple months how they turned out.

Yeah, what is it with insurance companies? Home insurance said we needed to mitigate (it's not like the few trees actually near our house were bad, c'mon) in the middle of winter. Winter. So a relative ended up going out with a chainsaw and slipped on some snow, nearly cutting himself. Ug.

Yikes!!

All my old insurance used to do was hike rates whenever things would happen.

Slave lake was on fire (pretty far distance away from me....other end of the province) yoink! Up go rates!
Hailstorms in Calgary? UP GO THE RATES! (Note: Calgary was about a 45 minute drive from me)
Luckily I sold my house when I did...the rate increase on my house insurance from the Calgary flooding was insane.

And I was prairies. Away from any bodies of water except the odd farmers slew....

Insurance regs are written between vested interest groups and lawmakers, they are the ones to gain. The lawmakers decree we have to have insurance and the vested interest parties only offer insurance for as much as the market can bear...it works well for those 2 groups, not so well for the consumer.

Oops, I did say rant over but it does get my dander up.

There was a chestnut blight in America that just about wiped them all out. There are some cultivars that have shown resistance, but it isn't like everyone has a Chestnut tree on their property like they used to.

Purple Viking! Yummy! I would have to grow Sweet Potatoes in the greenhouse, well, this year for sure.

I had to look up Purple Viking potatoes to see what they were like. I can't remember seeing those around here but if we can get some seed potatoes for them, they sound like an interesting one to try and I think they'll grow here. Thanks for the tip Margie!

We get sweet potatoes all year round, orange and purple ones, I love them, Funnily enough they are not fattenning like normal pots and they crisp, chip and shred really well. I mash mine sometimes with pepper and butter then make little 'balls' and pop them under the grill really scrummy, they take colour quickily so you have to watch them.
