Good Hot Morning!

th

Two more days to Go!

We have had amazing thunder storms every afternoon for a few days now. Not much rain but it sure cools the house down :) mountain effect weather is weird and unpredictable !i wonder if it will happen during the show over the lake in the 4th!!!!

This is unreal. 76 degrees at 6 AM? And why am *I* up at this hour, anyway? I was up before any of the chickens in the office were moving about! They usually go outside long before I am out of bed.

I had one loss I think I can attribute to heat yesterday (no other indicators): one of the BR packing peanuts shipped with the goslings six weeks ago. Hale and hearty the day before and in the morning yesterday, found dead as I was making all the watering rounds. Oh well, it was a cockerel.

Sister 1 now has a black chick to keep her Cayuga duckling company. Sister 1 (huge fluffy blue Orp) and Monica (bantam dark Cornish mix, daughter of Little Bit) are both protecting them, but Monica is also stuck to some eggs. Sister 1 has been taking them out to the middle of the coop floor on small jaunts. The babies run to hide with Monica's eggs when I come check on them, Sister 1 trusts me and tries to call them out again. It is a hoot to see that tiny black duckling snuggling under hens or waddling after them.

I may co-opt the kiddie pool just to splash in fresh water myself, today.

It is not as bad here today. But I get to deal with the bay bridge today! Aarg. At least it is after traffic.

We do like 5-6 jobs in sf all year. Of course 3 of them would have to be in a heat wave during a Bart strike.

I have been feeding H and (B?) organic chick starter to my young birds and King pro am show and grow (they were out of layer pellets) to my older girls with free choice oyster shell. Since integrating them I have been feeding the little ones outside the pen in the morning so the big girls will allow them to eat and so that they are eating the right thing. I would like to feed the same thing to everyone when my current supplies run out. Ron, or anyone else who feeds King. what should I ask for at the feed store? Thanks!

Cock Birds(Proper according to the Heritage Large Fowl Thread) should not have the calcium of the layer. King feed has a Starter\grower crumble--small crumble for chicks--that is Natural, non GMO. It is called Freedom Starter\Grower. I get it for 22.50 per 50#s. Keep giving them free choice calcium and once a week or so give them some good granite grit.

All of your chickens can eat the Freedom Starter\grower.
