My primary project is a barnyard breed/colour mix (for my own personal tastes) ..

A sebright / pekin cross.
And hopefully a citrone bird (at this stage I don't care which breed/type so am combining this into my sebright/pekin cross project)

The pekins have such a lovely nature but are a bit too broody for my preferences. The sebrights have always been my favourite, they're like modern day pterodactyls, owning their enclosure with attitude 10 times their actual size - but they're not a common breed here and finding good examples for purchase is tricky.

My current roo is my second gen product from this project. He has a decidedly sebright stature but a lovely calm and friendly temperament. This season I'm hatching all eggs produced by him and my silver sebright hen.

The citrone aspect to this project is currently floundering - this rooster "may" contain the gene I am testing for but with my current stock it will be a very tall order to confirm. Sadly, due to some rather persistent predators, I've lost several birds that would have made this project a little more robust, so I'll wait to see how this seasons chicks turn out and make some new breeding stock purchases as appropriate ready for next season.

My second project would be more accurately described as a planned experiment. I'm aiming for a second barnyard breed/colour mix (for my own personal tastes) ..

I've got Lavender Araucana eggs in the incubator - due to hatch in two days. I would like to cross these next season with my sebright line. I'm not sure how this project will go - I expect mixing two breeds of significant size difference will have it's challenges - but since my current rooster breeds with a full sized hen now - I'm assuming he will be up to the challenge again next season LOL.

Sounds pretty awesome. So what is the color Citron in chickens? I've never heard it talked about in this matter. I know that Citron is a color in Pet Python snakes that are albino based bred to other colors like Mottly, or Pie bald.

I figured out what Citron is in chickens, but it's not the color name. The colors that Citron is based off of is E^Wh/E^Wh, Co/Co, Db/Db, S/s+, Ig/Ig.
If you don't know what these genes mean, I'll explain.

Oh I'm loving this thread with everyones project plans.

Needless to say, I have my own! However I'm a complete novice at genetics, but still want to make something work for my own needs.

We currently raise chickens for both meat and eggs. I'm already working on getting heavier birds, but my dream would be to make a havier dual purpose Easter Egger!

I want to create my own ultimate barnyard mixed bird, and the traits I'm after are:
Beard and muffs, some leg feathering, heavier carcass, mostly blue and red colored plumage with partridge or laced patterns and random colored eggs. Just an ultimate dual purpose bird that is also pure eye candy..

I can share some pics of what I want to aim for.. But will mostly look like a crazy Easter Egger (since I'm clearly obsessed with them)

Firstly, I have this gorgeous chocolate egger I got from a local breeder. I looooove the straight comb with the beard and muffs.

he appears to be a type of Birchen Maran crossed with a chocolate laying Easter Egger. And while birchen wouldnt be my go-to color choice, his overall body shape and face traits is something I want in my dream rooster. UNFORTUNATELY, he passed away recently BUT I do have another one that looks just like him and is Blue!!! Unfortunately don't have a picture of him, but hes a dark blue with a bit of a less coppery saddle. (Wish his saddle had more copper like the one that passed).

As for color examples, if there was some way I could recreate what my Easter eggers have, I'd be in heaven. I would also settle for a blue laced red pattern/color as well.

I suppose the best description would be a mostly blue bird with red or copper leakage, but more than just leakage? here is another near perfect example that I found on the internet. Great color and good leg feathering.

Here is another good example of light leg feathering. he's my light Brahma X EE. And completely took all the columbian color and pattern. :barnie(his mother was the hen in my avatar)

Comb type doesn't matter too much, but id like the roos to keep a straight comb like the first pic...

I have no idea where to start to aim for what I want. I can only keep hatching and keeping what want and selling or utilizing unwanted birds.

I have so many breeds I can’t list them all I have so many breeding coops that need to be built. My main focus is on my heritage barred rocks I want a rooster with a wider head and a higher tail I also have to remove my current rooster because he developed red leakage in his neck feathers (huge bummer!) my second breed is red cuckoo english Orpingtons i’m getting some red english Orpington hens to keep my cuckoo strong!
The red cuckoo Orpington is gorgeous!

So you want something like my EE, heavy weight, Black Birchen, with light leg feathering?

He's a Blue Egger.
I used to have a Red Spangled Blue EE Cockerel who hatched out a dark brown egg, possibly from a Wyandotte.

I culled him, & have no updated pictures. I'm using my pictures as an example of what you want.

I'm working on my LF Dark Cornish this year as well as a white/dark cross to see what I get. I have 1 White Cornish hen so I'm crossing her with one of my Dark roosters to see what I get maybe in hopes that I can breed them back to white. Although I heard I might get spangled depending on what the white hen contains in her genes. I'm looking forward to the experiment.

Oh how neat! Almost what I want! I like birchen but id prefer that blue/red color, just like that last picture almost. But definitely more heavy weight too. Wish could see more of how he looked like.. Thanks so much for sharing! Right now I'm hoping to hatch an EE heavy roo to hopefully have him over my head to push out the beard and heavier genetics.

As long as the Pattern gene is there you may get spangled, if not you may just get mixed, or solid colors.

Brahmas are a great heavy bird for this type of breeding project. I'm gonna use Brahmas to breed our own meat birds.
