Chicken Coop in the winter!!

Hello Im new to this chicken thing and live in illinois I have some RIR and some BR and I few Bantam breeds...I was wanting to know what my coop is going to need done if anything so that the chickens will make it through the winter...Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.

Make sure there is a lot of ventilation. Insulation isn't a requirement, but can help. Try to keep the coop free of drafts. Chickens are tougher than they look and can make it through winter without much trouble.

Thank you for the advice I thought there wasnt much to it besides that and to keep their water from freezing.

Frostbite in combs, wattles can be a problem, but they seem to recover quickly.

Frostbite in feet is not so easily recovered from.

You will probably be fine, I'm not in your climate.

Im hoping for the best...I have RIR that has been laying double yolkers and she just started layn last month!! The two lay very well

I am in the the same climate as you and I do insulate and heat my coops. There are several threads about winterizing coops going right now in this same section. check them out, they will be very beneficial to you.
