Chicken laying small eggs

Hi all, this hen was hatched last year and is around 8 months old now. When she started laying her eggs were of a small size which I thought was completely normal for a hen who had just started laying. But as the months went on the size of the eggs she was laying never changed and when compared to normal chicken eggs they look quite small. Any ideas on why this is happening and will she always lay small eggs?

Well, as the ancestry of this mix-hen is completely unknown one can only guess. And there might even have been some bantam genes down the line that could easily show some generations later.
We will never know, it's just a guessing game

Some breed of hens lay smaller eggs. If your pullet has been laying on smaller side for months now, don't expect it to change much. Some production breeds and hybrids like RIR, leghorns, Minorcas, sexlinks etc were bred to lay larger eggs. If your birds are large egg layes then this pullet's egg will look particularly small.

Avoid hatching her eggs small eggs produce small chicks, large eggs 65+ grams produce wide and chunky chicks.

Thanks, I was thinking of putting some of her eggs into the incubator but now that you’ve said that it’s made me rethink it. I wouldn’t want small chicks that would go on to lay small sized eggs.

There are quite a few chicken breeds that lay only medium or small eggs and end up being huge, for instance Brahma.

If the rooster that is to inseminate her eggs hatched from a big egg, her offspring might as well lay big eggs.

I have 5 Easter-eggers that are 4 months old & some stared laying last week. All very small eggs. This morning I had one the size of a marble. The big egg is from a 3yo Americauna.

For larger eggs select chicks with well spaced legs. Hens with legs closer together lay smaller eggs.

Small chicken often lay small eggs! I don’t think it’s anything to worry about! What breed is she? A bantam?

I’m not too sure but I don’t think she’s a bantam she’s pretty much the same size as my other large fowl hens. She hatched from an egg that was off of eBay and described as mixed large foul.
