Cluckawalla Valley has moved! TAKE THE QUIZ, PG 23!

Progress today! The pond has been dug and is filling with water. It will have a continuous feed of fresh water from the irrigation canal that crosses our property. Our excavator put in two large jumping rocks for the grandkids and then some nice flat rocks on the edge of the pond so I can sit and put my feet in the water and commune with my geese. He also made a beach entrance on one side for easy entrance and exit for the geese. The pond is 60 feet long, forty feet wide, and ten a half feet deep. There are rocks and cement boulders stacked and arranged on the bottom for fish habitat.

The rocks on the right are for jumping and the ones on the other side for sitting with feet in the water.

The barn/coop is taking shape nicely as well with the framing done and the roof rafters going in today. I can't wait till I can get in there and set up the inside for my flock. I am so excited!

Also, there was an exciting find on my property when the brush and dry weeds were cleared. There was a huge metal container that I wanted to use as a planter. My excavator picked it up with the backhoe and brought it up by the house. He placed it on the point by the pond. He buried it in dirt about halfway up the sides to level and anchor it. He showed it to me when I arrived at the house today. Here it is with my flip-flop in the picture so you can get an idea of how massive this thing is. He told me he found out what it is. Get ready for this.

It is an antique cooking pot from a monastery. It has huge metal loops all around it to hang over a fire. It was used to make soup for a thousand people! There is one exactly like it for sale at a local restaurant. It is being used as a planter there too. The asking price? $15,000.00!

How lucky am I? Now I just have to figure out what I can plant in it that the deer won't eat!

Stay tuned for updates! We are actually moving in this weekend!

I am eating my heart out with jealousy!

Yeah, I'm with putting up a privacy fence.. can't wait to see the runs you build for all of your birds.

And I adore that wrap around porch.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all of it... much better than the other place.

Looks great! Your coop might be finished before mine!

And your geese are going to be in heaven! When are the ducks showing up?

No idea what to plant in the big soup pot, but for the pond, you should plant water hyacinths. They are beautiful, help keep the water clear and the fish love to hide under them.

Thanks everybody! All good ideas. I am going to have to nix the great idea about using the pot as a fire pit though. We are out in the country in a high fire danger area. One of the main reasons for digging the pond, other than Bonnie and Clyde, is to have a place for firefighters to draw water if there's a fire. Even our weed clearer would only cut at dawn and after watering the weeds thoroughly, due to the danger of a fire if he hit a rock and caused a spark. We will maintain the defensible space around our home but many of our neighbors do not. I don't want to be the one who starts the fire! So, great as it would be as a fire pit, I must plant something in it. I may drive up to Nevada City and look at the one that is already planted to get ideas.

And Kelly I am already thinking ducks! Just have to research some more. I am duckilliterate. That's a word, right?

Thanks Mahonri, I agree it's the best. We put offers in on five other houses but this one was meant to be. If you wanna come visit there's a guesthouse above the garage! But I must warn you that if you're idea was to escape the heat, it was 110 here yesterday. But it's a dry heat.

Well, gotta go. I have four broodies hatching out eggs and packing to do, including boxing up all my chickens after they go to sleep tonight. How does one move chickens anyway?
