Cochin Thread!!!

Thanks!

Right now I have a Frizzle rooster and a Frizzle hen (in separate pens paired with smooth-feathered mates, of course). When I had just one pen, the only Frizzles I kept were hens. I think mostly it is just personal preference, but I had a few reasons for keeping the Frizzle pullets: a.) Some of my hatching egg customers did not want to hatch Frizzle chicks or wanted only Frizzle eggs, so I could send eggs from either Frizzle or smooth hens according to their wishes. b.) I found that it was easier to sell excess cockerels, and juvenile pairs and trios if the cockerel was a Frizzle. and c.) I really prefer the look of the Frizzle hens over that of the Frizzle roosters. It's purely my own opinion, but I'm not a big fan of how the frizzling looks on the roosters' longer feathers.

That makes great sense, especially reason "A". Thanks so much for your thoughts.

My Armand was my first frizzle, so I'm kinda partial to him, but I'm thinking I'd be better off without him.

I've probably posted these pics here, but this is my current pair.

So, you think keeping a smooth feather cock bird over frizzled hens is better than keeping a frizzle cock bird over smooth hens? I am thinking about doing a frizzle project. :)

Frizzle or smooth doesn't matter, keep the best looking and the best type based on your goals, I don't think it matter whether the hen or the rooster is the frizzle, it's personal taste. My frizzle hens get their feathers wore off easier by the rooster, so I prefer the rooster to be frizzled and the hens smooth.

Hmmm, that's another interesting observation, about the frizzle hens. I hadn't thought of that either. I didn't think it "mattered" per se, but I was mostly curious of other folks reasoning for which way.

I guess I'll wait and see who turns out looking the best and make a decision then.

I appreciate all input that might help me decide. Thanks!

bought 6 cochins at the Flea market this is the only one left. the died of a respatory infection. sso we got some medicine and the last one is doing great. it is a week and half old.

may call it Lucky. my feather sexing abilities says it's a hen. we'll see if i'm right later on. worst case i trade it for a cochin hen.
