Craig I have a mottled cochin that had half of the front of his comb tore off. I am assuming that his show days are over. Once it's healed it would be assumed to be a defect instead of an injury. Am I correct?

The comb injury would be considered a defect. All things considered, in a class where this bird was competing with another and every other aspect were equal, the bird with non-injured comb would win. Show days are over.

Thank you, I would love to find some white cochin bantams, my 5 yr old grand daughter just started showing and she loves cochins and I have not been able to find any whites.

Vulture hocks are the long stiff feathers that grow downward from the thigh/hock. They are a requirement in such breeds as d'Uccles and Sultans, but are a DQ in Cochins. Young Cochins can often "look hocky". These feathers in a Cochin should be soft and pliable.

Now they both have it. So I'm thinking it's probably just what someone says appears to be vulture hocks.

Hello everyone

, very helpful thread--thank you! I have a question (or two, or three) for you if anyone has a spare minute. We have been doing chickens for a while but mostly Silkies and guineas, plus our laying flock. However, my kids want to have their own birds and are interested in showing cochin. Our son (fifteen today ) is interested in gold laced cause he says they look like little dragons. Our daughter (ten) wants to have whites, and wants to raise frizzle as well as smooth. Of course both of them would be working under our close supervision, and they are both responsible kids, but I am still wondering if you think this is practical? I'm especially wondering if our daughter raising frizzle is a good idea...they seem like the breeding is a bit more complex. Otoh, I hate to discourage them because they have been saving their own money to buy the birds and are being very sensible in their approach. She is really taken by the frizzle and beein reading books on them, etc. Thoughts? Are there bantam cochin colors that a kid is more likely to have success with? I personally love blacks, but so far they aren't biting.

honestly I will say that it is almost impossible to find gold laced in good quality. I have been looking for 3 years for some and happened across some at the Crossroads show. They are still not as good as my mottleds in type. There is also a lot of complicated breeding involved with patterned birds. I would say that for kids starting off, whites would be great. They are more readily available in good quality birds.
