Cochin Thread!!!

[Funky Feathers]

This is a Blue Mottled pullet I am thinking of keeping to add to my breeding stock of Splash. I plan to breed her to this new Splash cockerel I hatched out from my stock. Any opinions on their quality (as far as breeding & show)?

Thanx Clare! As they are all out of the BLR project, they are just 3/4 GL, so I guess not too bad. The first two are the most promising for next spring breeding. They all have yellow feet/shanks. The last three get to stay for the time being because they're pullets!!

I got Danny's pics up on the CI website this morning - he sure is maturing into a handsome young man!!

Did you get your CI calendars? I'm sure he'll want one of his own!

Ahhhh, now I see why he'll want one.

Any thoughts on these guys?

My thoughts:

Jack Jr is too light to use as a breeder for Splash. Perhaps to breed to a good Black to make Blues to make proper Splash. If you used him on a Splash hen you will get birds that are even more washed out than he is which is too light. When Tom was judge at the CI Eastern Show earlier this month one of the comments on Splash he posted on CI facebook page was:I'd also like to see more splashing. I feel that most of the Splash Cochins we see in shows are too light in Color.

Thought on the pullet is this. Why ever use a Mottled based bird? I understand they are typey but Mottleds color and pattern will change at every molt and always get lighter. Not what a splash is and especially when there is a real push to get Splash recognized as a variety. There is a chance Splash would not be accepted if enough birds do not meet the Splash standard at the qualification meet.

Took photos of some cochins at the Ohio Nationals this weekend. The LF black cochin was the Grand Champion, and white bantam was Champion Featherleg. I learned a lot, got some nice birds and had a great time! I'll have a video of the other bantam cochins in the show up in a little while and will post when it is finished loading.

Wow! They are both incredible! I especially love the white one. I really need to attend one of these shows next year.

Thank you for posting on this. I am just starting with splash and I have two really nice black cochin cockerels that are going over several splash hens to make blue. Should I take a nice blue cockerel from them and put him back over the splash hens to improve color? What would you use a standard for good splash coloring? I guess I am asking if there is a breed that has really nice splash or even a picture of what a quality splash looks like.

I am hoping from this project to be able to start another pen of blue and mottled birds. I have a typey black mottled pullet and would love to have separate pens for playing with BBS for now since it is what I have. Thanks for any input!
