I AM SO MAD I CAN HARDLY TYPE! I couldn't write about it yesterday. I was too mad and to upset at the same time.

I went to physical therapy yesterday. When Mike and I got home we discovered our german wirehaired dachshund had gotten out of his kennel. Mind you, this is a chain link kennel that has been reinforced with cattle panels because he has gotten out before. He had somehow pulled the cattle panel away from the chain link and then worked and worked at the bottom of the chain link until he pulled the wires loose and made a hole.

He was in the process of mauling one of my royal palms. It's a wonder DH didn't have a heart attack. He was so mad and I'm sure his blood pressure was off the chart high. I got excited and started going too fast on my crutches and a screw came out of my crutch and the crutch split in two and I almost fell.

Anyway, after counting the dead yesterday, and then having two more mauled turkeys die overnight, he killed several chickens, one guinea and 3 turkeys.

This dog is going to a new home ASAP. I'm not going to put up with that any more. I am going to go pick up a pair of mature slate turkeys to put in with our lone surviving hen, so hopefully she will stick around.

Oh Ivy that is too bad. I sure don't understand why a dog would do that. I had one back in the 70's that got loose and went in and slit all the throats on 50 chicks. There were only like 6 survivors. She didn't eat them just killed them. Back then chicks were cheap. I would probably have shot the dog in my anger and then felt awful about it the rest of my life. I actually did that another time when m mother in laws mutt dogs came to eat chicks. I still feel awful about it.

That is terrible, Ivy. I am so sorry. I would be livid. It hurts a lot worse when it is a pet that harms our birds and not a predator/stray. I hope you didn't hurt your knee when your crutch broke. I, too, had a dachshund that I had to rehome because she kept killing my birds. No matter what I did she got loose. I don't regret for a second finding her a new home. Just be sure to specify that he can not be in a home with small animals. Chloe went to a great family that loves her to death and I have a yard that is safe for chickens. It is a win/win for everyone. I hope you can place him asap.

Ivy, I'm so sorry. I agree - the dog probably needs to not be around poultry at all. All of my dogs have been good with chooks (actually, its a pre-requisite as they've been adopted since we kept poultry so I made their adoption conditional upon them not bothering the chickens). However my neighbor and I swap animal care so that if we're going out of town, we can each rely on the other to care for our pets while we're gone. She has two mini-dachshunds and one of them in particular is TERRIBLE around the chooks. I have to take her out in the front yard to potty because I simply can't trust her around them at all. I guess that is a hunting type breed that just finds the "sport" of it too irresistible. I know you were so happy to get those turkeys and I'm sorry the outcome was so bad, and also that you almost fell on your brand new knee.
