We started to build a new coop for our new flock. The old one is a TSC prefab and just not large enough. I think our flock is as excited to move into their new home as we are to get it done, since we are having 100 degree days right now.

This is the coolest place on my property. Lots of shade and nice breezes.
The new coop and attached run will be 8 ft x 4 ft, the coop-5.5 feet x 4 ft. with 3 nesting boxes. The old coop was 6 ft x 30". The pullets and cockerel that will be moving in soon are, 2 Australorps, 1 Orpington, 1 Cochin, and 1 Cochin Cockerel. My cockerel and Orpington, seem so big at only 12 - 14 weeks.

Hi there, it's been a week and we have made progress, not as much as we would have liked, but the temps have been 99+ everyday, so we cans only work a couple of hours at a time. Also, we took a day to secure the sand foundation. We have walls and perches, side door for access to clean, back doors to check nesting areas for eggs. We are going to use the small hardware cloth door from our old coop, for a ventilation window and the larger hardware cloth door from the old coop for a back window also for ventilation. So they are ready to go, and the holes for windows are cut, however, since we are still keeping our flock secure at night in the old coop, the windows cannot go in until we can finish up in a day.

What are 'smaller' and 'larger' in numbers....1/4" and 1/2"??

Cool. Please share pics when you can:highfive:. For how many chickens? We are excited for our flock to move in, we think they are too as they are always hanging around in there.
Mine are currently sifting through the dirt pile we made from digging the base. I have 9 girls that will move into it with a couple silkie girls to possibly join them. It will be 10' wide by 8' deep so how many will fit is endless lol. I would love to show it off when he starts constructing it :D!

It has been a month since I posted that we were building a new larger coop for our teenagers. Well the coop is built, just need to paint it.

Side trap door for cleaning access, note the roomy area underneath the 2nd story, for them to hang out. It is all on a bed of construction sand with hardware cloth buried about 3 " deep. besides additional predator prevention, This is also to level the area and keep it dry, and dry ups the poop, so there is not smell.

And this is the Master of the house- Stu.
There are a few things we would do different, now that its done. But overall it works pretty well and the tenants seem to like it.
