Lost... Well, You could trade place with me??????

I'm in Iraq.... and will miss Christmas with my 4 children and 3 granddaughters...

but, I have about 3 or 4 thousand troops here to keep me company.. quite a few who call me Mom...lol...

The DFAC (dining facility) promises a huge spread for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, and even tho, I'd rather be cooking, like I normally would, there's an upside to that as well... No Dishes!!!!

I've been here almost 8 months... have 6 or 7 months to go... and making plans to make homemade soap, detergent, candles... get my animals back and get re-aquainted.. have family weekends at the beach... work on my house, garden.. the tasks are endless..and my mind swirls at the thought of going back home...

Lost, so many people are in need, and if not in need, could use a friend, a shoulder... reach out in church, and start there...

and..BTW, postal services improve everyday... It takes just 4 to 5 days to get a flat rate box ($10.95) over here.... altho, it takes abot two weeks for mail from here to reach home...

and if you can't give of yourself with helping the needy, or with time, then take a few moments to pray and give thanks..you would be amazed at what our young 19/20 yr olds have accomplished in the middle east!

work at the voting booths... they can always use help.. I volunteered to work nights on the McCain campaign..and what an invaluable experience that was...

Lost, its all at the end of your fifngertips... just reach out...

and here's a hug from me.... (((((((((((((((((((lost)))))))))))))))))))))

Athena, thanks for such an uplifting message. I'll pray for your time in Iraq. Can you PM me with a list of things that those around you could use. I'd like to get some boxes together to send over to you to or to the appropriate party to distribute for the holidays. I may be able to make it a project for our little church.

Kimberly

Pray for you military members, bake cookies for neighbors, cut down a small tree and thank God you have a house to put it in.

A very true and profound statement ...it worries me alot to think that our economy is so bad people really will become homeless by the thousands and little children will be hungry...what has happened to us?????

Lost ---- Athena, Zoo, Debi and Hoosier have offered you some great suggestions here, see how easy it is to hook into a network of caring people? Do chekc out the crochet and knit threads because they have a common group of people that check in eeryday and support each other through numerous ups and downs...you know, like the world SHOULD be...

Debi-Whenmy children were young, we(ex and I) usually didn't have any money either. We would be risigned to not having a Christmas tree that year and something would always pop up. A friend would come by with one or something.

We figured it was a good Christmas if we had one present under the tree for everyone. Sometimes they were as simple as a little golden book, a thermal shirt, a rattle, etc. The most improtant thing is that you are together and healthy. All this will be most important for everyone this year. We also are very tight this year. I have already received my Christmas present from DH, DGD and him will each get one, although I will make them each something also.

Hold eachother close and thank God that you are together and healthy.

Monica

This year we're going the uncreative route and just putting the ingredients together to make cookies in the nice sized mason jars - topped with a pretty patch of color and tied with some jute string.

I heard the story of the Christmas spider years ago
But it was about Mary and Joseph bringing the baby into the stable and he was cold so a spider spun the baby a blanket and from then on a spider was always welcome at Christmas. I wish I could find it but it was done in a lovely poem. but thats the gist of it

Cookie ingredient jars are still creative

ETA Purr that version of the Christmas Spider story rings a bell for some reason. Must have heard it when I was a kid. Maybe my grandmother told it to me when I was a kid.

I am actually going to use some of our eggs to make ornaments. Wal Mart has awonderful glitter set for $23 that will make probably 100 ornaments! I am excited to get started. Of course, I am no idea what I am doing....

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. There is always someone who has it worse no matter how bad things are going for yourself. If I offended or upset anyone by my post please accept my most humble apology...I sometimes post without thinking.

Update:
Hubby and I searched on craigslist for a homeless dog which we drove and picked up today at a shelter. Will take a while to fatten him up but was so grateful we picked him from the many. Donated 2 50 lb bags of dog food to help the shelter out...felt good.
Have contacted angelfoodministries.com and will be volunteering as I can at one of the local sites in my area.

Perhaps I can try to make things better???

Think I will try baking a few favorites for the farmers who help keep our drive passable in the winter; Hungarian Butterhorns, caramels, fudge and rumcake.
