Yes I've ordered yarn online from Jo-Ann fabrics but only yarn I've worked with before. I'm always nervous to order anything in fabrics etc. that I haven't seen and felt in person. Cuz I'm kinda picky.

The yarn got here very quickly and it was exactly what I had ordered but I've only done it once.

Great question greenfamilyfarms. I have been wanting to know that as well, b/c I get so many e-mail coupons that are online ordering only. Thanks Sunny!

I love making granny squares!!!! There are a ton of free patterns for all kinds of granny squares floating around the internet. Does that mean you might want to participate in the Spring crochet swap??? How's the kid's crocheting club going? I think that is so wonderful what you are doing to help the kids learn all the lost arts. Keep up the fantastic work.

Just started crocheting.... Can do chains and single crochet... I've been practicing for 3 nights and I think I understand it enough that I will now begin a scarf. I'd say I did about 30 chains for the bottom, and I've now done 3 rows of single crochet. Not ready for any of the other crochets yet, I believe... I would really like to just master this one

I'm using a J size (what appears to be light metal) hook and some cheap orange yarn from walmart... Didn't want to invest in any fancy stuff yet

I was wondering how you keep the bottom straighter... Right now it has a slight curve to it. Thanks, CBS.

ETA: I'm learning from this website, which I would recommend to anyone who still needs to learn. I love that it has the step by step pictures and videos so you can look at both until you understand. Here's the link: http://learntocrochet.lionbrand.com/

I am interested, I was looking at the one in progress trying to to see how to do them right,, notice right? I noticed a lot of different patterns in use and different tensions or tightness and looseness of the stitch. I was wondering how much of difference that makes? I like the looser looking stitches in the squares and the tighter one in something like a blanket.
The kids are doing well, I'm about to put a project on my donorschoose for yarn for them, it's been awhile so we are getting low but they are really doing some nice things. We are learning the Granny Squares together and finding out some yarn just is not easy for us beginners to use! We have about 15 lap blankets ready for a nursing home or cancer center, we just have to make a decision where this group is going. We are having trouble with beanies this year, the girls and the boy who were doing them last year moved up to a different school this year and we have pretty much all beginners now who can do the simple single and double stitch, and now the easy granny square. Thanks again!

I know your kids are always doing such wonderful charitable things. I love to hear about them. Do you need a simple beanie head hugger pattern?

The requirements for the Fall swap was 6" granny square, but you could do any pattern of granny square you wanted to and different patterns. So as long as they all came out to be 6 x 6 it would be easy for everyone to attach them together. We decided on 4 ply fall color yarn to have a little unity. I think I started using H hook and then I switched to a G hook which worked better for my pattern anyway. It's been a lot of fun. We are now coming to a close. I'm sad I won't get to attach mine right away b/c I have other projects I have to get back to.

There are a ton of different granny square patterns. I think when I learned how to do the basic granny square I went to a site called crochetcabana. It's www.crochetcabana.com. I just printed out their pictorial directions. I remember in one swap 2-3 yrs ago a gal learn how to do the granny square pattern by watching youtube. She had never crocheted before in her life. If I haven't done the basic one in a while I still have to whip out my old crinkled directions to take a peek to get my started. Oh and all my warped ones my first try many years ago. They were funny! Wish I would have taken a pic. I had some warped mess ups this past swap as well trying to learn a new pattern. I gave them all to DD and she sews them on her funky refabbed jeans. LOL!!

Very cool!!!! The more you practice the better you will get. I did the same thing when I trying out scarves for the first time. I grabbed some obnoxious bright multi colored yarn to give it a whirl. Then I have to laugh, b/c my daughter actually liked the scarf and wanted it. Then I used the same obnoxious yarn to try a new beanie head hugger pattern out and I couldn't give that thing away, but last summer my daughter took it to the camp she works at for the auction they have to raise money for kids to go to camp there and it brought in $65. So funny!!! Somebody liked those wild and crazy colors. Keep up the great work!

We have a pattern we got off of Lionbrand, but I am always interested in new and easy ones! We had someone give us a bunch of smaller balls of leftover yarn, a few hooks but a ton of knitting needles we can't use. If anyone wants to swap some crochet hooks for knitting needles we are up for it. They are everything from tiny little skinny things, to two pointy ended ones and then huge fat needles too. If we can't trade them I'll be giving them away, I hate to hold on to something someone else could use and we can't. Heck we could trade for yarn too!

Is this the first rumor of a Spring swap? Once I'm finished with the slippers and have made some progress on the Milky Way afghan, should I start on Spring colors?

Sam,

Welcome to the thread. It sounds like you're doing great. It's amazing what you can do with chains and single crochets. Once you've got a little experience, you'll find other stitches are based on what you already know.

A couple of things can cause the curve. First, it's common to make the initial chain tight and then loosen your tension. I find it helpful to intentionally make the chain loose. Second, it can be something about how you begin and end your rows. I don't have the vocabulary to help you here, but someone else might be able to.
