When I started, I was using a 5mm hook. That one is a good size and is good for most common yarn types. Red heart and super saver yarns are good starting yarns because they are cheap, but I also like the cotton yarns (candy yarns I think) because they have a nice texture and are good for easy projects like coasters and potholders.
