Crochet "Chat"

Anyone else getting ready for the holidays? I started early last month and still have some projects yet to get completed. In the past I made a lot of chicken themed items for Christmas, but since most of my family doesn't share my obsession with chickens like I do, LOL, I thought I would make other things this year. Although right now I am working on a couple of chicken items for a friend here on BYC.

Anyone have any projects going? Lets share what we are making this season!!!

Good morning! Hope you don't mind me poking my nose in here......but was thinking you all might be able to offer me a bit of advice. I remember crocheting as a child, with my grandma, but never really carried it beyond some very basic stuff and haven't even attempted to do any for probably close to 30 years, so I'm pretty much a total newbie or even worse, a newbie that will think she knows what she's doing. Anyway, I have decided I want to start crocheting (again). I Have every intention of reading through this thread from page 1, but in the mean time I have one question:

So, my first very beginner question is, is there a particular size/type/brand of hook and/or yarn that is the best starting point for someone to (re)learn crochet? My options are limited to WalMart in the town we currently live in, but there is a Michael's and JoAnns about half an hour away if need be.

Help a newbie out?

Years ago, walmart used to carry a nice lamenated card that had all the crochet stitches in it and they were very easy to follow! It was called "Pocket Guide Crochet". So you might have a look around in your walmart and see if they still carry this. If not, you might find something on line? Lots of youtube videos I am sure!

When first learning to crochet, stay away from the B, C and D needle. LOL Those tiny needles can be rough to learn to use at first. I would start with a E or F. These are popular sizes for many projects. My E needle has the paint actually worn off the tip from using it so much. LOL But you can get a full assortment at walmart...B through J (I think) (Walmart is all I have out here for my supplies but I haven't checked out the needle section in a while)

They mostly carry "Red Heart" yarn. It's a fair yarn. They do carry other yarns, but the best color selection is the Red Heart. (at least it is here) The more expensive yarn you purchase, the less fuzzy it gets while using it. But I don't have a huge problem with Red Heart.

And if you find yourself becoming super interested in more crochet, definitely check out the JoAnns in the future, they may carry lots more yarns and supplies.

Pinterest is where I find LOADS of free patterns! Just type in say, "easy crochet table runners, free pattern" or something like this and pages can come up with all kinds of projects. You can save them to your own board for future use. I have SO many I want to make. LOL

I just finished off this yesterday for a friend here on BYC. Its actually several patterns I put together since I couldn't find the perfect chick pattern hat!

Anyway, good luck and let us know if you need help with anything! :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you -- and that hat is adorable!!!!

I did pick up a nice little set of hooks at WalMart but discovered almost all of their yarn at this particular store is acrylic -- it's one of the tiny "old" WalMart type stores, not much of a craft aisle to begin with. One of the first projects I found that I want to work requires cotton (heat related items) so I guess I'll just "have" to drive over to JoAnns and Michaels, woe is me, lol........(I actually quite like running over to the town they are in, so this is a great excuse).....besides, there'll be a much bigger/better selection over there.

You are super welcome! Definitely stop by JoAnns and Michaels for a better selection. And don't be afraid to let them know you are new at this! Some of those types of stores even have learning classes too and you might stop by one of these if they do. I am sure someone that works there can give you some pointers too.

Good luck and post up your projects here when you are done, I would love to see them!!
