Daily Digest for The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

It looks as though our Ameraucana hatch is finished and we only got 3 out 12. There were eggs that were moving but never pipped. I am getting frustrated. We need to get more hatched with the 40+ we are incubating now. We are about to set another dozen or so Rhodebar as well. Of course DH does not keep notes so I cannot ask anything about temps or air cells. Except for our very first hatch last year and the one I did a few weeks ago (in a still air), we are only getting one to three chicks out of 12 or 16 eggs. Is it because he needs to wait longer to take the hatched chicks out of the incubator? He said he waited 24 hours for the first two. This is the first time we hatched in our Hovabator. We incubated in the Farm Innovator. Both have circulated air and an egg turner. We placed the hatching eggs in a modified egg cartons with holes in the bottom of each egg holder. I planned to purchase the Brinsea Spot Check but I am concerned about reports of defective ones being delivered lately.

There are lots of reasons why hatches can be unsuccessful. First, question would be to try to figure out what part of the incubation is the issue.
How many eggs are viable at days 7, 14 & 18?
At hatch, how many start hatching and quit?
At what stages?
Internal pip?
Pip?
Zip?
Etc...

Chime in on what CayuseRanch asked.

I force myself to open each egg and try to figure out when they died. If most of them died at the same time, then I try to figure out what happened at that time. I have helped with figuring out stuff like this before and pictures really help! Once it was a heat spike on day 14 or 15. Nicely formed chicks with healthy looking egg sacks.

To continue...

In High School I was on the wrestling team as a sophmore. The coach drilled into us to work on the basics. The Basics for incubation are:

1. Temperature
2. Humidity
3. Ventilation

Temperature you will work on when you get an accurate Thermometer. The Brinsea is very good and they will work with you if the one you get is defective. I would get it directly from them and get the current discount code from their facebook page. Thermo works is another good one. Look for one that is as accurate as possible.

Humidity is not as critical since a range from 25 to 60% will work for most eggs.

Ventilation is often over looked. All the vents need to be open after the first week or so. Ventilation, heat too high and humidity too high will suffocate the chicks. Oxygen goes down in the incubator to lethal levels. You also need to make sure any vent holes in the bottom are open. Egg shells often get into mine. The place that the incubator is in also needs to have good air flow.

Please post more information and we will help you for sure!

I did not know that PAchickenlover was a transmission dismantler! Good job!

Lol neither did I but I was tired of looking at it sitting in our driveway and having to walk around the thing. It was worth a lot more taken apart than it was intact. (Hubby is a mechanic, and I took a course on auto body repair) I've had a good teacher. Lol

I am from a Family of Mechanics. I worked at Wrecking yard my first year in College. It was a great experience.

It's good to know that the parts are worth that much in a transmission as salvage.
