Dog thread!🐾

OK this will be many parts so here it goes. Yes, herding dogs shouldn't be with stock 24/7. It's actually a big pet peeve of mine, and a theme I've noticed quite frequently done. Herding dogs appear like a predator to the stock, and that's how they move the stock around. With controlled pressure. On the other hand, LGD's become part of the herd, and fight off predators. In addition, LGD's can effectively protect the stock against predators, something that herding dogs are not equipped to do
Okay, interesting. People around here just call everything that interacts with their live stock 'herding dogs', so that's probably my confusion.

Only 3 popped up on the AKC website. We have plenty of LGD mixed dogs around, but those likely won't be what is around where I move either.
Be careful with LGD mixes! specially mixed with herding breeds they are unpredictable with livestock

edit, unless it’s different LGDs mixed together

Some of them aren’t AKC recognized yet despite being older breeds. And some are more landrace type.

Yeah, I get that 100%. Everything (dog) with pointy ears gets called a wolfdog here

What about Anatolian Shepherds? Great Pyrenees? Maremma? Kangal?

And there’s tons more

Meh. Most are either mastiff ones, which I keep being told I should avoid unless I absolutely know what I'm doing, and I'm just not a fan of how they look
Komondors are a double coated breed, so shaving is a big no no. Also komondors are a corded breed, which is absolutely cool, and actually helps them blend in with the stock, and helps them stay safe from predator bites
So then it would definitely be a no because it would get heat stroke out here with all that hair

That's why I'm trying to find an actual breed I like if I go that way. I've seen a ton of these mixes and they have everything from corgi to Dane to pittie and healers mixed in

Ah okay that makes sense. And wow those are some wild mixes!

Actually, it's a yes! A double coat helps maintain good body temperature. Trust me, double coats work! Most of our LGD's are double coated, and they wouldn't last in the heat if it didn't work

Hello šŸ‘‹ I am new to this thread

- do you do any dog sports or want to do any? I want to do IPO and Herding and Agility once I am older and have my own dogs
-do you show dogs? No but I would love to and I watch AKC and Westminster and the dog show and my county fair when I show my turkey and hens.

-whats your favourite breed/what breed do you want to get? My favorite breed is a Belgian Malinois. I want a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, a Border Collie, and a Working Line GSD

-introduce your dog. This is my dog Ollie. He is a 4 year old Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog/Pitbull/Supermitt mix.

Really? Huh, awesome. I'll add them to the list then. What about grooming, woth those funky cords? Or do I just leave them alone?

OK. I'm not experienced with corded coats one bit, but I do know that once the cording process is complete, it's easier
