Earthen Acres Homestead: First mixed laying flock

Soo tonight I want to talk about Vickie. She was named after my aunt who helped us purchase the flock as a belated wedding present. Vickie is most likely a Barred Rock, but the greenish iridescence to her back makes me think maybe shes a mix? Vickie lays light brown, medium-large eggs about 4 times a week. She is incredibly curious and fearless, and is often waiting for me at the fence when she hears me open the door to bring treats. I love her coloring, and watching her run after a tossed carrot top or apple piece is one of the highlights of my day.View attachment 2070061

She's beautiful. There is something regal about barred rocks.

This is my Sydney. She is my first barred rock. People like you talked me into wanting one.

This is Marykate, the darker of my two Red sex links. She gives me 5-6 brown eggs a wwek, and is feisty and rambunctious. She really loves a good dust bath, and appears to be the favorite love interest of our young rooster. I beleive a red sex link is a mix between a RIR or NH rooster and a plymouth rock hen. They are an excellent addition to any flock, and a wonderfully versatile dual use breed.

Tonight the spotlight is on Pearl! Pearl is a White Leghorn who lays 6 large beautiful white eggs a week. She is little skeptical of humans, but can be enticed with treats. She is a proficient digger, and the main architect, excavator, and laborer of a lot of dustbaths. She is also very cackly in a sweet way. She always has something to say. Some of my favorite things about pearl are her fluorescent shiny cheek feathers, her impressive rudder of a tail, and her disproportionately large comb and wattles. So here she is...
