Hey, Kathyinmo!

I have never seen chicks frolic like this! In the morning, when Eric brought his clutch to the house-clearing, they would all spazzy dance wildly for a few minutes. Otherwise – think about it – they are in permanent military-discipline mode. They graze close to dad. They sometimes take a break to drink and swim at a dam, but they don’t ever madly frolic like these guys. In the wild, it’s too risky.

Gee, poor Fred. I remember seeing him long ago, when his limp was barely noticeable. He’s so lucky to be with you. You know he wouldn’t make it in the wild.

Fred almost acts like he has a bone spur in his foot.
Do you know if he ever injured it (broken bone or anything)?

You might want to have Fred checked for gout. Thing Two had a funny walk too, but didn't realize until after he died it might have been from gout. I am not exactly sure how to treat for gout, but I have read that there are treatments, such as lowering the amount of protein and calcium in their food and feeding them cherries.

In other news, found someone in the process of hatching emu eggs here in Kentucky and put our name on the list for two male chicks! So eventually our female will have some company...

Congratulations IlaWampa! Glad you are getting chicks!

I did take Fred to a vet. (Not a great experience.) The vet said there was nothing wrong.

Yes, I know he would not make it in the wild. He is just a pet, and very sweet. He has never been the same without Wilma. He was always very dependent on her.

He was great entertainment for the school kids last year at one of their programs. He does run around when Tyler (29 yr old son) plays ball with him. Tyler kicks the soccer ball around and Fred runs toward it (sometimes away from it).

I don’t quite understand. That is, there’s nothing that can be done?

I hope I didn’t sound callous. What I meant was that it seems – from just the bit on the video – to be a far worse thing than I recall from the earlier video.

What I was gonna note is that otherwise, he is – not just saying it to make you feel good – a handsome bird. He has a great ‘suit’ of feathers.

(Gawd . . . what’s the right term? ‘suit of feathers’? ‘coat of feathers’? Is there a Government Department that I can ask?)
Might he come good in the long run?

[S.E. stumbled upon a pair of wild birds drinking at a dam in the bush today. Got about a two-second look at them before they bolted. Breeding-pair. Dark. Thick carapace of feathers. In really good condition. Lovely!!]

Emu.can be affected by barberpole worm like Alpacas etc....that's why proper worming.is necessary.
Also Westnile and EE WE like horses.

Hi all, I am new to this thread although I have spent plenty of time on it admiring all of your lovely emu's...I just picked up my first two babies yesterday (a boy and a girl) they are 3 wks old and when we brought them home we took them into the garden (its fenced) and let them run around, they where very excited I think it may have been their first time outside and I didn't see them really eat or drink much, but they seemed very active, today they have been eating, drinking, and passing food very well and the little girl is doing great but I am concerned about the boy. When we first picked him up I noticed he tucked his head underneath himself, but he's been doing it quite a bit, he'll tuck his head, and walk around like that or plop down on the ground, then he'll snap out of it and go about his business....it's very strange, I got him some vitamins and electrolytes, they have a a good sized pen to run around in with plenty of bedding, traction, and spots to hide, as well as a few heat lamps to keep the whole area warm...he acts normally like 70% of the time and the rest is like this....I'm pretty concerned if anyone has any experience with something like this or knows someone who might I would be extremely grateful
