Falling Down Heights, my daily life

Okay, so the auction yesterday was disastrous for the most part.

The purebred exposition line Aylesbury drake I brought sold for $3! That was IT. I was so upset!

The group of three banty juveniles went for $5!!!

I brought two pairs of scovies, one being my oldest drake (2 yrs old) and a one year old limping female who was otherwise healthy as well as being a great broody and mom, and they sold for $10. The other pair, my Lilac drake and a chocolate barred hen, this year's hatch, went for only $20...

Fared a bit better with the rest; Gray Call drake sold for $20 although the Pastel one only went for $22. Far cry from the $85 I got for a Gray in the Spring!

As for rabbits, I was disappointed with only getting $15 for an 11 week old buck, although I got $25 for his sister. I also brought the one that stopped feeding her babies and got $55 for her (that I was pleased with!) and an older maneless Lionhead doe sold for only $12.

And this place takes a 20% commission so I came home with $150... That hardly covers the cost of feed that they used.

Lesson learned, do not sell in the Fall.

Did something stupid: Put "Bob" in the small coop with the two hens (OEGB and a banty puff ball BYM). Waited until bedtime and got the girls settled, then put the boy in. Not a fuss! He was *really* happy and started making rooster-to-hen noises at them!

Stupid part was not quarantining him for a couple of weeks, but it's cold and I didn't want to keep him in a (large) budgie cage in this weather, all alone.

One thing I noticed, he is definitely a ROOSTER and not a cockerel! The spurs on this boy!!!

What a day......... Or rather, what a week.

First night with freezing temps. Had to stomp the hose to get the ice inside broken. Once the water started flowing, the hose pooped out little ice sausages.

I won't be able to get the plucker this weekend because my daughter's van died and it won't fit in my car. So today I processed four Chantecler cockerels by hand. It was supposed to be five, but I just can't bring myself to culling the smallest one (who also has a non-standard comb) because he is so friendly. I let myself get attached to him.

I now know why Chanties are good in winter; their feathers are more like fur!

Yesterday, I had to buy a new battery for my car. Thus why I did the chickens, and need to do the ducks ASAP. I have no money to afford any more feed this month. I may try to sell the OEGB or at least some of them.

The icing on the cake was when I heard screaming coming from the neighbour's across the street! It sounded like a cat was being mauled, but then I realized it was a child! I ran over expecting the neighbour's boy, but it was my grand-son! Their dog had broken it's chain and attacked him!

Thankfully the wounds were not numerous, but he has two deep punctures on his arm and was traumatized, understandably.

We took care of the wounds, the neighbour may put the dog down.

Do you know the dog was vaccinated? That must have been terrifying for you as well!

Thankfully, it wasn't bleeding too much so I didn't panic. Was ready to take that dog on with my bare hands if needed though!

Yes, vaccinated. I'm still very angry about it. Never liked that dog or trusted him.

The bunch in the main coop/pen were so much more relaxed after I took out those four cockerels. Even though there are still two in there, everyone was quiet and laying about the pen in content.

I'll be busy the next several days as we get our last nice weather before the cold settles in. Need to finish up preps for the trailer and dig up potatoes, still have at least 9 ducks to cull, as well as rabbits. I don't know where the heck I'm going to put them all!
