Feed sack recycling ideas??

I thought of a few other uses for those bags... in winter I fill them with fresh manure and bedding and staple (or use roofing screws if they are heavy) them over my large screen doors on coops to not only block cold air from getting in but it generates heat if a draft comes in around the bag. When a chicken dies on me I put them in feed bags roll them up and put them in the garbage can. I often line the bed of my nursery wagons with bags and it creates a free range shelter for when it rains so chickens have more options than a crowded coop to stay dry. I use them cover to vents on coops when a windy storm is in the forecast. From time to time I need to put some chickens in a rabbit cage as I wait for someone to show up to buy them, I lay an empty feed bag over the cage for both shade and shelter from the rain. I fix them to fencing and netting on some of my runs that have limited shade to create more shady spots in the middle of summer. I am sure in a few days I will remember a dozen or so more uses.

I used a bag to cover a prefab coop henhouse clean out door that had a "window" that was covered with hardware cloth but had no way to close it against drafts. I still can't imagine why anyone would design a permanently open window right in front of the roost. Prefab junk. But a prefab can come in handy for emergencies. It has for me.

We switched to Modesto Mills because (among other reasons) their bags are 100% compostable. Just un-coated brown paper. They are a great "brown" ingredient in the compost bin. Given a recent news story that China is no longer accepting our recyclable plastics, I think it's a good idea to write the manufacturer of whatever brand you use to encourage them to switch to biodegradable/compostable packaging. We have to put the burden back on the manufacturers or they will keep selling products in plastic. My 2 cents.

Well, this thread sure inspired me. I am admittedly not good at sewing AT ALL, but I made a tote by hand after seeing the opportunity with a dog food bag. Just to try my hand at it. I'm fond of it actually- I think it would make a nifty tote for kindling in the winter!

I'd take that to the grocery store i stead of buying reusable bags! Well done!

I used one in my car to protect the floor before I got floor mats. Another time I used 2 or 3 to cover holes in the chicken coop where the chicks were escaping. I had to secure them because the older chickens would scratch at them and try to move them out of the way. I used another to feed the chickens wet food that would be lost on the ground after a rain. I think you did a good job yourself brainstorming!

Ah, using the feed bag underneath the feeder for spilled feed! ::facepalm:: why didn’t I think of that?

I re-use my feed sacks for garbage bags in the barn and garage. And since I can't sew, I once shipped a bunch of extra feed sacks to this organization:

and they sent me a few finished totes in return. Sadly, looks like they are no longer in business I like the feed sack totes with nylon handles and the box bottoms best. They work great as grocery bags (dry goods) and for general "totin' stuff around".

Here and I thought using them to protect ones pant legs, when putting chains on tires In the Snow was a good idea...Heck with spending $ on CarHart overalls, Eatting has become SUCH a Habit!

I use mine to make roofs on the pens. Right now they are only on the nursery and the quail cage. We are collecting to do the entire run.
