"Ruth" is 8 weeks old and is an Easter Egger. We got 8 birds as day old chicks, 4 breeds, 2 of each breed. Ruth is bigger than all the others and has a different look. She (he) gets along well with the others until bedtime. They all head for the coop from the closed in run at dusk but Ruth tries to push others off the ramp (raised coop) and blocks the door, trying to prevent others from entering. We have seen up to 5 birds piled on top of eachother in the coop door, Ruth (Based on my suspicions, I have started calling her Ruthter) always there and appearing to be at the centre of the log jam. Is this behavior something anyone has seen before? Does the behavior and/or the look clearly say rooster to any of you?
We are in an urban setting and roosters are not allowed. Ruther is the prettiest bird so we would be sorry to lose her. How long until we would know for certain?
