Not at all - your post sounded like someone with a question.
The birds pictured are red sex links (commonly sold as ISA Brown, Red Star, Golden Comet, Cinnamon Queen, etc - because it sounds cuter than red sex link) - sex links are great because male/female determination is easy and certain due characteristics that are directly linked to gender - in your case brown with white = female (male would be almost all white with bits of red/brown on the wings). These lovely ladies will load you down with big, brown eggs before you know it!

I would classify these as neither RSL or RIR - but rather Production Reds

    Welcome busy!

Just popping in for a minute. I've decided no more summertime broodies, unless I have a cool place for them to set. I leaned into the broody suite to fill the feeder and smelled rot. The sussex broody had crushed two more, and one was oozing greenish yellow yolk? The other wasn't oozing and I carelessly peeled back the shell to see how far the chick had progressed. It was alive, but quickly bled out. I just keep telling myself that it was probably already too crushed to survive. :(

Saw a possum last night on top of the brooder. I waited until it climbed down and crossed the yard, but still missed. I have enough money from last week's spontaneous chick and eggs sales to buy a trap, so that's what I'll do.

Edit: adding a picture. She looks like a tom turkey!

So I wasn't so far off, production reds = egg layers. Haha. But I'm sad because I didn't get on BYC before I got them because they look so much alike I don't even have the fun of naming them. But, that gives me an excuse to get some more :).
Another question from a post in this discussion....way back when Granny had all the illness. I have Safeguard for Goats because I also breed Mini Aussies, but....I'm not sure I can do the liquid for the chickens. Someone posted using horse which is more of a paste and dose with a pea size dollop on bread. Did I get that right? That sounds much easier since I am a novice.
Now back to reading because I have to catch up since Dec 2014. Granny...love your humor. Husband thinks I am laughing at him so he straightens up.

I think there may be some crossed wires here - the birds that you posted photos of are Red Sex Links, my reference to Production Reds was with regards to the birds posted by Prostar which are Production Reds - different than your RSL.

@campingshaws - I absolutely adore how utterly ridiculous a broody hen looks when she is trying to appear fierce. If they only know..............

Morning All ! welcome back watermelon, welcome to the thread teach ! I used safe guard for goats in liquid. I didnt know it came paste. learned something new already. headache is from my blood pressure AKA kids. I gave up on trying to learn red sex links from all the others. Your MIL is right they are all mixed mutts from the rir ! Heritage RIRs are much bigger and darker then ours today. it is a convenience made by us to get all hens or more eggs. Any chicken will lay an egg for the most part. Just depends on what color you like. [IMG] personally, I favor them all ! It shows in my yard. (sigh) The broody is very cute. I have 2 little ones that have been broody for a month. I take the eggs every day just to watch them dance !!

Was anyone else unable to get BYC to load for about 15 hours?

Hmmmm, no - were you in timeout? Imagine all I could get done with 15 hours where I couldn't spend the time on BYC, lol
