Thanks y'all. She looked very peaceful. She always slept with her eyes open, so that wasn't even weird.

We're going to focus on our weimrador through the summer, then regroup in the fall. Maybe wait til puppy season. Or maybe just have a single for awhile.

to you. Love the new look - I've done a few "massive chops" in my day with my hair and always have that split second of regret but end up absolutely loving the new, shorter do.

@Sunset Ranch - what a lovely photo. The little fuzz butts can be very hard to resist - if only they could stay that cute and little a bit longer, they grow up SO fast! I hear you on wishing you could spend more time (ie all day) chatting away here in this thread - such a great bunch of folks!

@granny hatchet - so sorry to hear you are still suffering so much pain. I often think of you and all you endure. Does heat/cold therapy offer you any relief? I imagine at this point you'd try just about anything - hypnosis, acupuncture, voodoo?? I suppose if one must be afflicted with an addiction, poultry is among the better ones to have.

@ChickenLady2014 - it can take a hatch or two for some broodies to get the hang of all the parenting stuff (heck, look at the natural parenting abilities of some of us humans, the "more advanced" species) - that being said, I will always choose to have a good broody raise chicks vs. having to do all that work myself - just seems they never cooperate and time their broodiness to suit my wants/needs. My most recent threatening broody decided to pull the plug on her act by the end of day 2, so that washed my plan of securing a few new chicks to graft under her, oh well - DH would probably have killed me if/when he finally realized I had more birds (there are some advantages to having the coop be way out from the house and a husband who rarely crosses the pasture fence since all those animals are "mine".

Fairly certain I have contracted the plague. Hit me last night and am feeling no better today - just spent my lunch hour sitting outside, in full sun, wearing a sweater and that was the most comfortable I have felt all day (it's 75 here today and I am a lover of A/C for anything over about 70) - oh, the chills! Luckily my work is such that I can self-quarantine in my office and get things that *have* to be done this week taken care of without infecting those around me.....

Toying with integrating the latest batch of babies into the main flock this weekend - or maybe next. They're coming on 10 weeks now and more than ready to get out of their little growout house I have them in now. They put up quite the fuss when they see me go out and turn the big flock out and have become increasingly difficult to get herded back into their little run at the end of their play times. DH seems convinced I want to keep them up by the house - he doesn't realize how much I am looking forward to cutting the chicken chores in half by having just one big group to deal with. Thinking I'm happy I held off and never got around to taking my questionable Welsummer to any of the swaps - really had me second guessing my sexing there for a bit around 3-4 weeks, but I'm quite certain she is a she now, so at least I didn't needlessly cut my numbers.

Thank Ol Mare, broodys are funny creatures, it has been a great experience. Was really hoping that my BO that was acting broody was going to stay sitting, have eggs in bator to hatch in a week. Was hoping she could have some to hatch and raise, but she is a first timer and didn't stick to it. I may be in luck still though.I have a hen that I got as a trade last summer at the same time that I got broody momma. She tried twice to go broody when I had big momma sitting, so I broke her. Well it seems Vampira is contiplating going broody again. This would be her first brood as well and she is quiet the mean broody. Luckily there is only a week left on the eggs. If I had to contiplate taking her off the nest once a day for 18 days I would definatly rethink her being broody momma. I think I will try putting her in the broody cage to see if she will stay sitting. Wish me luck lol.
 
Hi granny girl, you have been very quiet these past couple of days. Sure hope those grand babies haven't tied you up and stuffed you in a closet somewhere, LOL. I know your trying to save money and trying to lighten your chore responsibilities with the birds you have because of your health. But if you are at all able to have a broody momma raise chicks ~ go for it. It is so much fun to watch them interact with momma. You just need to do it once granny

Hope you are doing ok, been missing your sense of humor the past couple of days.
 
OK, question for anyone. Does anyone have a stupid rooster like mine? Started introducing momma & 2 week old babies to the adults this afternoon. Everyone did fine except for 3 hens. Each of them would get too close to momma & babies causing momma to go on the offensive. She would flare up and attack the offending hen. Then the other 2 hens would run over and starting attacking momma too. She would be fighting 3 hens at a time and instead of the rooster coming over to assist her, he would come over and attack her as well. The babies all scattered between 4 pens looking for safety while the 4 birds fought. As soon as the fight would stop the rooster would get in momma's face wanting to mate with her. She has never had any respect for this rooster and doesn't let him mate her. All she wanted to do is round up her 11 babies that were scattered everywhere. I thought roosters were supposed to protect momma & babies?
 
A rooster's job is to keep harmony in the flock. After he breaks up the fight it is perfectly natural for him to dominate the hen that doesn't respect him.

It is too soon to put this hen and her chicks in with the flock.
 
Hi youngens ! LOL I am ok i guess. think i am getting what ol mare has. a case of the yuckys . head cold maybe. there was a mix-up with my meds and i got some stronger then i take so i havent been taking any. so, sitting on my tush a lot. 5 seramas gone . did i say that already ? Probably . hahaa I have a broody bantam right now. been fighting her every day to collect the eggs. she looks so funny . she is very small and she is sitting on a mountain of eggs. she dont even touch the wood. Pizza is here !!!!! my belly calls .
