The poster didn't say from where she was posting. Attitudes toward fire arms vary according to region. In the west we think nothing of toting a fire arm with us when we go to care for the livestock. In a place like Massachusetts, she may have an unhappy encounter with a swat team.

How far from the neighbors does she live? Those bullets just keep on going until they hit something. There are a lot of unanswered questions here.

I recently dispatched two young mountain lions with my gun. Would have no problem taking a coyote and do not hesitate to take the gun with me when confronting strangers. (I live in the middle of no-where). This gun is good for birds, rodents and up.

How did you do that with .22? Were they in a trap or free range? Any pics? Confronting strangers with a .22, I would be careful with that... you might shoot them and make them mad.

Coyotes can take some punishment, call it "dispatch power," and you will need something that can reach out and touch them. This is especially so once a few of them fall to the shot. They wise up pretty quick once all the hubbub starts. They may have already done so, if DH is in on their trail.

Both calibers can be had in lightweight rifles, that are neither too heavy, nor kick and buck like a mule.
It is, however, true that if you are to intent on solving your problem with a gun - you need to bring enough gun.
I would avoid anything below this level of power. "Making coyotes mad" doesn't work. Half measures only drive the animal to get smarter than you. Using something under powered risks wounding the coyote, so it dies an agonizing, lingering death. If you want them gone for good, you have to take responsibility for that.
Taking them out humanely will educate the survivors in a way no "nice" methods will.


My recommended rifle for you would be a New England Firearms Handi-Rifle with a scope adequate for the ranges you have to shoot.

You never know who is reading these threads. Never admit anything on them. In some places, dispatching predators is just fine, in others you might find yourself in legal trouble. Never admit anything.

Also, if you are interested in an AR-15 they make a .22 conversion kit for them, so you can set it up to shoot .223, or change it out to a .22 without any calibration. My husband bought one and he loves his.

Some of you, given your druthers, would recomend a bazooka. All OP wants is a gun that won't kick too much that will knock down a predator in close without taking down everything in the neighborhood. A .22 mag or .22 LR would probably do the job and be easy enough on the budget that one could afford to practice enough to be come proficient with it.

I don't know what .22 you've been shooting

I deer hunt with one, Shot the last one in between ribs in the lung and out the other side. Deer walked about 30 feet and dropped dead. And that was my first time hunting too. It diddnt kick at all which was nice for me. I'm pretty sure its a ruger 10/22

Then the much less practical side of me says to get the proper permits, then get a fully automatic M-60 and bring down coyotes in style. Whatever floats your boat (or drops your 'yote).
