If you look at a map, Chicago (Chicagoland) is considered the northeast part of the state. You don't have to be at the very north to consider yourself a northerner in the state. ;)
Right, and if you divide the state into 3 sections from top to bottom(north, central, south) Chicago is definitely 'north'.

Any ideas on what type of roofing I use for my soon to be 50ft run? I want it to be totally predator proof. My idea was to just use hardware cloth and put a tarp on top to block the rain off of them but any better ideas? I don't have much time left to build it.

We have a 10’x50’ run. We built a 6’x8’ elevated coop inside the run so the chickens had a protected and shady spot under the coop which is elevated 2.5’ above the ground. We put a solid roof (plywood then black paper then shingles) on the coop which has a slope from 8’ to 6’ tall over a 6’ distance.

Our plan is to place 4x4 posts in the ground (with cement) and put up solid metal roofing over the 6’ outside the coop door, followed by the clear fiberglass corrugated roofing over the rest of the run. The roofing will keep the same slope as the coop roof. The fiberglass will let in light, but keep out snow and rain. We get pretty cold here, sometimes a lot of snow, sometimes just a dusting on top of ice, so roofing the coop and run was important to us.
