I wanted to look like a crazy person and talk to myself. My Brooder mama idea is to use a Behrens 4 or 6 gallon feed storage bin, and glue the heat pad in permanantly without any covers using gorilla glue other glues and glue options are possible. The reason for the barrel is they have no sharp edges and require no other modification and are readily available. :Welcome to BYC I felt the red one was way to strong in my area, and it was too late once I had them to upsize my bathtub brooder first time around. If you can find a heating pad that doesn't auto shutoff after 2-4 hours, you can rig it so they can come into contact with it as needed and save on that electric bill.
@KikisGirls @penny1960 @ronott1 Can probably give you better specifics on how to set up a heat pad brooder. For me I'd gorilla glue the thing into the inside of a 5 gallon barrel/bucket(1 and done).
Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like mewill never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Also checkout @Blooie 's mama heating pad. For small flock brooding it's an amazing design. I use a 4' sweeter heater in each of my 100 chick brooders.
Thanks for making us feel so welcome!
You already have some good advice on the bulb question so I'll just say hello and thanks for joining us. Enjoy those little chicks, they grow fast!
Then I am glad mine are not teflon coated. Thanks!Welcome to BYC. Great advice has already been provided. All that I would add is make sure that any bulbs used are not Teflon coated - that will kill birds.
