Welcome aboard to BYC family gr8 people tons of information loads of fun enjoy shake your tail feathers

Welcome to BYC I felt the red one was way to strong in my area, and it was too late once I had them to upsize my bathtub brooder first time around. If you can find a heating pad that doesn't auto shutoff after 2-4 hours, you can rig it so they can come into contact with it as needed and save on that electric bill.

@KikisGirls @penny1960 @ronott1 Can probably give you better specifics on how to set up a heat pad brooder. For me I'd gorilla glue the thing into the inside of a 5 gallon barrel/bucket(1 and done).
We ended up taking away the red bulb. The chicks starting acting irrational. Almost like they were trying to hurt each other. They were chirping loudly and attacking each other. So, we removed the red bulb, put back the 125 watt heat bulb and pulled their cage back in front of the electric fireplace. In just a matter of seconds, they calmed down, cuddled and feel asleep. Strangest thing I ever saw. Thanks for your suggestions.

Welcome to BYC! Great to have you here.

A red 250 watt bulb is exactly what I use. In fact, I just took one off of the latest batch of quail after about 5 weeks gradually lifting up since they were born.

By the way, excellent choice on your birds, every one of them!
Thanks for the help. I am glad to hear we made good choices on the chick selections. We did a lot research but were still not sure we had made the right choices.

http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/Hello rollachickens,
I'm glad you asked first about the heat bulb. Can we say ugh with no hurt feelings? Being in Missouri you can invest in a heat panel which you will be able to use if it gets very cold in your area. It's nice and safe and can be used anywhere. I mounted mine on the center support on the bottom floor of the coop. It's only 400 watts but I only use it when keeping newly hatched babies warm and when it gets to 0°. You can set the temp on it so you don't fry the babies and on 32° for the winter so your birds don't freeze their combs. This is what mine looks like and I found this 250 watt one on Home Depot for $70.

Here's a pic of the coop I mounted one in, it was unfinished at this point but I installed in on the 2x4s in the bottom front center:

Using this you can use a simple 25 or 40 watt bulb for light set on a timer to give them a cycle. http://www.henclass.com/heat-lamp/
