Horses I HATE THE 4th!

I am glad to read this because we have two new miniature donkeys and suddenly they started running like crazy! The Jenny is pregnant and I was so worried and could not get her to stop . I didn't know why they were running. But, while reading this I remember I could hear the fireworks from our rec park. We used to have a Dalmatian that went crazy on the 4th. I am not much of a fireworks person myself. I would rather spend my money on chickens or donkeys! I am very Patriotic though!! Happy 4th. !!

Mine are always fine. But as foals they grew up around it. The town always used to have the fireworks at the high school which is practically in the back yard! I just came in from watching the display. Grant and Grail are just as calm as any other day, sorry that yours are stressed. Wish there was some way to help ya. Good luck!

Edited to say..............

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!!!!!

I LOVE THE FOURTH!!!!!!

I love my horses too! I have a nine year old gelding, a seven year old gelding and a 3 year old stallion. When those fireworks go to flying, I look to the pasture and see my three wonderful boys grazing.

The two geldings will pick up their heads and look around through the first few fireworks, but my beautiful, baby, laid-back, QH, Black Jack, barely even flinches! I LOVE IT!!!

Last year, we even fired our own fireworks(mortars) right next to our pasture!!

Ya'll just need to desensitize your babies to loud noises throughout the year. We started when they were babies. My stallion is the best, he was born next to a gunrange/turkey shoot. We also block half the pasture off a couple times during the year and have the neighbors come over for target practice.

Don't hate the 'works! Use it as a test, to test your beasties "bomb-proofness". I look forward to our annual test..

:thun I just walked out to the run and found a spent rocket up against the run and the white hard plastic tube that holds the gun powder in the coop!! AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, I resemble that whole idiot thing, redneck or otherwise, you're referring to. I enjoy fireworks and I do regret that they scare your horses.

But because you have chosen to be a horse owner, I have to not enjoy a few fireworks, one night a year?

Ill say it anyway - Happy 4th of July.

Did anyone say you can't enjoy your fireworks? GOsh I missed that post!

I was thinking the same thing too Dave. I'm one of those "red neck Yahoo"s/"fools" out there shooting off mortars(the big Ka-booms). LOL We had some great ones this year! Of course we had to lock our "brave" German Shepherds in the bathroom.

As for the horses, it is our job as the owners to prepare the horses for life. If we know there is going to be a big celebration on our country's independence day, we should have prepared our animals for it. We randomly shoot off fireworks, firecrackers and shoot our guns near our horses just to keep them from freaking out at the "expected" annual booms.

Like I said before, I take it as a challenge, a test if you will. I take pride that my horses remain calm through the loud booms and explosions, but it takes training.

We are lucky to have 2 firework proof geldings. We live on a major freeway between Houston and Dallas. There seem to be a lot of 18 wheeler blow outs our 2 just keep on grazing. Had a friend bring there car-a-phobic (sp) horse out for a few days to help her out. I agree use this as a training op for your horses and dogs. Remember fireworks are only a few times a year

tehe.. mine are not legal, but we've been doing them for years...

shh.. don't tell anyone!

LOL. It doesn't matter. Fireworks that leave the ground are illegal in NC, but we were outside just a while ago and it was like a warzone out there! LOL I LOVE IT!!
