Mine are still trying to figure out how to milk the goats ... you can see it in their beady little eyes. "If only we had those bleepin opposible thumbs!!!! That tasty white stuff would be ours for the taking!"
Mine go crazy when i go in the garden, they know they are going to get something good, i usually give them fresh broccoli and strawberries, and like you describe, the first time i did it they ran away and wouldnt come out, you wouldn't even hear a peep from the coop, but now, ah HA! look out, its a shark feeding frenzy!
They never touched them. I am goin to try mealworms this weekend. I am a bit afraid that the site of all those armored larvae may cause my little tards to spontaneously combust.
Could it be that they saw them as "eyes" from a predator? I have Cockatoos and they are afraid of new things, especially if it resembles a face with forward facing eyes (like owls, cats, etc.).Their brains are hard-wired to be afraid of anything that might eat them.
It really is the funniest sight and i know we are in the chicks section, but I found that throwing crushed ice to my hens drives them mad with excitement?!!
When my husband and I are bored, we grab a handful of grapes and throw them, one at a time, across the backyard and watch those little fuzzy butts chase after them and play keep away. Since they're not laying yet, at least they can provide us entertainment.
