Illinois...

There's been a lot of talk about deworming products on BYC in the past few months and a number of products are no longer available it seems. What's a good dewormer (for proactive purposes just) and where to source it? That where to source it being important... I have no idea where to get the stuff, let alone what to get.

That said, I don't know of any presence of worms in the flock at all but would like to take a proactive measure. Ideally soon as we well be out of town next week so that can factor into the egg withdraw period.
I've heard people just adding food grade DE to the feed once a year for preventing. I've never done it so couldn't help much there other than the suggestion to research. It is cheap, F&F has DE.
Gave half of my chickens a permethrin bath and just DE to the other half and got about the same results. Unfortunately I should plan another bath this weekend but today is busy and tomorrow have to work ...

My ladies are singing up a storm and fighting for their favorite nesting box. The sun is shining and all the wet crap is dry now. Spring is here!!!

I have this idea for my run. It's 12x8 covered and right now I just have a mix of sand and PDZs over the grass that they killed within a week of moving in. My biggest problem is it floods. That's partly the roof but I think it needs re-grading. So my thought was to slope the entire thing toward the back of the lot line by digging up what's there now, putting in a base layer of pavers, bricks and gravel in order to establish the grade and then adding back the sand/PDZs over it (and probably some new stuff because what's there has been trampled enough that it's low ground now. I'm hoping between that and fixing the roof, it makes the rain less traumatic for them. Then I just need to figure out how to tighten up the coop (again).

I'm not in your back yard with you to give suggestions, but as a long distance suggestion, maybe try this.
If you have a border between yard, and run, like about 4 inches high,, fill in run area with sand to higher level. Sand drains easily, and since level is up, should remain dry mostly. Some water still will get in, but not much.
PDZ would run you to the poorhouse, and I think it is only really needed inside coop floor. JMO.
You may need quite a bit of sand,, like a whole yard. Not sure how you would transport it unless you had access to a pickup truck. (or someone that has one, and is work-grade bed) Depending on the size of truck, you may need to take 1/2 yard at a time. about 1,300 lbs per 1/2 yard.

Working outside today! Making progress on the coop. Got all the wire up and hubby started on the siding.

I got outside like many of you. It was a beautiful day. I got the swing set just about finished. I just need to add some bracing and eventually give a coat of deck dealer, but it's fully functional now. The kids were having fun on it as soon as I let them. We also got into the garden and got all the garlic transplanted outside (I'm doing a bit of an experiment with starting garlic indoors and transplanting it outside). We also got out to the store after giving my mother a ride to my aunt's house. We went to Farm & Fleet and Petco to get supplies for the puppy and ducklings. Nearly $200 later, and we still don't have a collar. 🤯 Now that it's cooling off outside, it's time to cuddle up on the couch, watch tv and have pizza for dinner.
Not a bad day...

I use Valbazen because it's a good broad spectrum wormer. I would rather use something that knocks out the worms and not d**k around with getting some of them or mess around trying organic methods that medically don't work. Those poor hens. And yes you have to throw out eggs but so be it, at least you're rid of the worms. This is the correct dosage:
"The correct dose for Valbazen is 0.08 ml/cc per pound of bird". It comes out to be about .5ml for a 6 lb bird.

Here's a great thread about deworming with really good info from Dawg53 the worming king.

Here's info on other types, not sure what's still on the market

Is this the right Valbazen product. And does that price seem right? Nearly $50.

I was hoping to find a smaller amount since I'll only use 10 ml to deworm our 10 chickens with two treatments. Any idea if it is safe for ducks too?

I never encountered a worm issue in my flock. Maybe they did have it, and somehow it got corrected on its own. :idunno What I'm saying is;; I never treated for worms.
Looking at the $50 price, and quantity is large, if someone with a sizable flock would split the meds, then It would be only $25 each. Wonder what the shelf life of this is :caf,,,, If it keeps for 5 years, then it would be a good option.
Keep searching some more, and possibly run across a smaller quantity somewhere else.

Never used wormers but if I had a big worm load I would.
once I seen a round worm in a roos poop. I used Some herbal recipe of dandelion, carrot, garlic, acv in blender. Didn't see any more. Never seen any in intestines. I feed them garlic every so often after that. Not sure if that helps or I am just lucky.
