IT HAPPENED!!!

Ooooooo now that is a double-yolker, I'd bet! It's random, but common in new layers. My BCM threw two in a row this past week without a day off inbetween(first 2 in the pic of course):

Anytime my girls throw those extra big eggs, that's what it is, always... or at least that's how it's been so far for me! Make sure to cook that one up extra yummy. Your carton is full of such beautiful eggs! Was Emma "branded" a regular EE, or Olive egger? She's got a really neat color going on!

She was branded by tractor supply co. She wasn’t really given any real breed name. Same with my other two hens. They were labeled rainbow EEs and those two lay the rusty colored ones.

My EE Emma laid an egg this week 1.5x’s the size of her normal eggs. Weighing in at a whopping 73g! Usually she lays about 50g eggs. Now this next question might be extremely naive however this is my first go at livestock. Does this happen because she didn’t lay one day and the egg just kept on a-cookin’ until she dropped it the following day? This egg has been the first egg from my flock this fall that has way over exceeded their norm. Do things like this happen often or is this just a random surprise that has no rhyme or reason?

like Mocha said it is just something that happens randomly. Some new layers do it a LOT other (like mine) don't really seem to do it. And yes it is most likely a double yolker. My EE has given me one so far and she started laying the very end of Aug. And funny thing was it was also 73g. her normal that the time she laid it was probably around 45-46g. I love double yolk eggs and was so excited for my new layers to lay some and I have only gotten one. LOL

so jealous of you getting 2 this week from one girl! If I remember right you have gotten a few of them since your girls started laying. Wonder if some breeds are more "prone" to them as new layers than others? hmmmmmm

How interesting! Well you really lucked out (or just plain good choices!) because those eggs are beautiful.

I think it must be a case where some do it more than others. I heard it's more common in the hybrid layers that are bred for high egg production. Zoingo lays her giant eggs but still throws the double yolk eggs pretty frequently.


Also, Silver just climbed into a nest box and now I'm being a total egg cam creeper. Nugget has been in the coop most of the morning staring at the nest boxes, too but she hasn't gotten in... right now she is screaming the egg song at Silver

Yes I am very fortunate. You were correct as well regarding the huge dinosaur egg. I made a egg casserole for the fam this morning and cracked that bad boy open- double yolk!! The curosity was killing me. Turned out delicous Side note. I've heard some people washing the egg shells and grinding them up into powder for either their garden or to add to their feeders for the girls to add some extra calcium to thier diet. Anyone want to chime in to let me know what you do? This summer in our house have been trying to be more deligent about useing all of our waste in a more benificial way. Adding our trimmings from the kitchen to a compost, left over veggies to the chickens if we don't make use of them, ect. On top of that, I also date my eggs with a basic stamp/ink from the office store. The tiny bit of ink used to do this shouldn't have an effect being able to use the powder, correct?

Hummer was in the nest box forever again this morning. I have found since it has gotten colder they sit in there a LOT longer and most times it is well after they lay. I think they are like wow this is warm and cozy I think I will stay in here. haahaa. Nugget came in and was walking around and staring at her FOREVER (probably an hour) then finally went into her box (they lay in different boxes. LOL) and Hummer left. Annabelle hasn't been in today. I was shocked both of them went in since they have laid the previous 2 days so on day 3 (well Hummer think Nugget is more). so guess we see what tomorrow brings for eggs.

woohoo on the double yolk!!!!!!

I have cooked mine and then just crushed them up and put them on a plate to give to the chickens. I don't grind them and don't add them to a powder. I wouldn't think the ink is bad. I haven't thought about that but know many use ink. I write mine in pencil but haven't even thought about that. I don't always remember to cook up the egg shells like I should when I cook with them. I should do better since they seem to love it!
