So far this summer we have found 3 HUGE black snakes in the coop!! My daughters boyfriend relocated the first one who was found in a nest box. The other two, who had both swallowed golf balls, were put out of their misery (and mine!) My grandmother always had golf balls in her coop when I was growing up and I never asked her why. My grandfather told me a couple of years ago, after she had passed away and I started raising chickens, that they were for the snakes. Snakes will swallow an egg and then go wrap themselves around a fence post or something similar to break the egg and digest it. Well....they can not break or digest a golf ball. My chickens know were to lay, so the MANY golf balls in my coop are to punish the snakes!! Sorry snake lovers.
