I've soooo had it with Kitty! I don't want to do this but...

As with any surgery, a lot of the end result has to do with the person conducting the surgery. I take my animals to a GREAT veterinary surgeon. What I will do when he retires, I am unsure of. When our cat was declawed as a LAST resort, we encountered no behavioral problems watsoever. The healing period was short and consisted of a slight gimpiness and paw shaking for 36 hours. Do what you have to do, Gritty. In my mind's eye it sure beats euthanasia or putting the cat outside.

Thanks Sour. Yeah good vets are hard to come by around here too. Which is why we drive an hour, bypassing two other vets, to take our critters to the one we do. We sure can't put Kitty outside. Not only is she a chicken killer, but she'd be easy prey for the coyotes. We only have two animal shelters close by. One is a high kill "dog pound" and the other one, the one KiKi (our other cat) came from is no kill, but stays full. I'm sure the songbirds, the FULL GROWN rabbits and other wild creatures Kitty used to catch and kill breathed a sigh of relief when Kitty became an indoor cat.

We have Mobile vets here, mine is awesome, she can even do most things in the surgery van.

Reduce stress reduce complications.

If available I would opt for laser-

I have 2, 2-foot declaws (rescued that way) and one fully 'armed' -

(one of the odd ones at the shelter was a two foot (right side) declaw- who came up with that!)

In the mean time you could get some soft claws for your kitty while you wait for your appointment. They are plastic nails you super glue onto their nails. I'd hate to see your furniture ruined. My friend used these for her Siamese cat and they worked for her. I think they stay on for about a month. Good luck! I still can't get over our carpet that is ruined. We would of either rehomed or declawed our cat if she didn't stop. They can have some pretty bad habits that are hard to stop.

Agreed, there are better ways of doing the procedure and better pain control options available now. I would choose the same option if it was de-claw or re-home.

I would never hesitate to use this procedure again. I had a very destructive cat prior to the laser declawing coming out and I took him in every 6 weeks for neon green claw covers. It cost about $5, he kept his claws and sported a cool color to boot.

Don't know how much luck we'll have getting them on her, but we'll try.

I also took Dar's suggestion and brought in a log from the wood pile. So far it's just sitting there in front of the couch.

You could try and wrap her up in a big towel if you can't get them on. Good luck with the log and putting on the soft nails.

Yeah that's what we do when we try to trim her nails. My DH is a big man, 6' 4" tall and 280 lbs. It's everything he can do to hold her while I clip. She bites, hard. She will claw at any part of flesh she can get at. She's just never tamed down; once a feral always a feral is Kitty's motto.
When the soft claws arrive I may enlist the help of our SIL to hold her. I'll just lock her up before he gets here so she can't pull a disappearing act into the walls. I'm afraid for my DH to hold her anymore, he's on coumadin (blood thinners) and has a compromised immune system. He needs a bad cat bite or scratch like he needs another hole in his head.
