July 14th - NEWBIE Set 11 eggs at 2PM CST. Anyone wanna join me?

Candled yesterday and looking really good. I've got 11 out of 18 developing strong and possibly a couple more. Since I bought a dozen and the rest were extras I'm thrilled with that. Hopefully we'll keep on track and have a nice batch of Silkies come August

My grandson wanted the eggs from CJs he fell in love with them....and wants to try and show them...we adopted these 3 and homeschool them so we go out of our way to try and find ways to keep them busy and learning..around the 4th of july time frame another set of grands were here visiting and Daniel was showing David Jr CJs website and David came to me with Nana why does Daniel get some and I dont? well all you Nanas and grandmas know the drill and more were ordered from another auction and they are also in the bator.....then the girls wanted some lavendars and before you know it....we are hooked on chickens.....I have always loved roos I could have 1000 roosters and be happy if they wouldnt fight each other....and the incubating process but once out of the egg I am not so interested.....My Honey loves the chicks and chickens and the kids sell chicks for spending money....

We homeschool as well so this is a project for us too. I need to put together some curriculum to study chickens, habitat, anatomy, etc... Should be fun. Right now we're just enjoying the incubating period.

What is 'CJs'?

I'm going to show my Silkie from CJ in the open classes at the fair next month

She's probably a little young yet - she's just barely over the minimum age to show - but we're just doing it for fun so we're going to go ahead and take her. Next year I hope to have at least one or two SQ Silkies to get out there between the one I have from CJ's and the batch I'm hatching from Catdance. I'm just diving into the world of showing but I'm excited to try it out!

Ok, this isn't my hatch that's going along with this one, but I had one Sweetgrass turkey hatch yesterday and another waiting this morning. I have one egg that had been pipped for about 12 hours when I left for work (that was hard to do) and another that hasn't pipped. For my hatch that was set on the 14th, at last candle at least half of the 24 were developing and maybe more. I'll check again soon.

(if i repeated what anyone else said i am sorry in advance, i haven't read the whole thread) I was wondering what you marked the eggs with? if it is anything else other that pencil lead it can harm the hatching chick inside. i haven't seen that personally but that is what all the experts say and they have hatched tons of hatches before.

I marked mine with sharpie before I read about potential harming of the chicks. I'm hoping it isn't a problem.

EGG UPDATE: I candled a bit yesterday. It's been 10 days. It's still hard to see anything with most of them being brown eggs. I did see several eggs with large dark masses so I'm hoping that is chicks? We won't candle again until day 18, next Monday. Crossing fingers for a few hatchers.

My temps are still varying. 100 on one side, 98 on another. Sometimes those vary to 101 and 97. I'm trying to just think of the average temp between them. When one side is showing higher, I'll swap those eggs for the other side's lower temp eggs, so all eggs get some higher temps. I don't know. It's all an experiment to me! lol

Getting nervous. We'll candle for the last time on Monday and then go into lockdown. I'd had the humidity keep pretty steady for days at 45-50% and I just plan to add more water. Will the humidity drop more quickly during lockdown or will it run about the same as the rest of the time?

My temps are sticking pretty m uch the same on each temp, to each other but vary between 98 and 101. Usually around 99 though. Hoping that's okay. I think the varying i had between the two temps had to do with my jar of water with sponge was on one side and I had taken the other jar w/sponge out to lower the humidity. When I put it back in with slight water, the temps stay about the same.

Anyone else getting close to chicky time?! We should hold hands and pray. lol NERVOUS!

We go into lockdown on Monday for my first hatch! We only had 3 eggs and 1 never developed, but my last 2 are looking good with tons of movement. HOping this first hatch gives us 2, I'm not sure I can go through this anticipation again! GL to you on lockdown!
