July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

They’re beautiful! All pullets would be excellent. 🤞
From the July HAL chicks I have 4 Legbars (3 pullets,1 rooster) and 2 Silverudd’s (1 pullet, 2 rooster) remaining.

Then the 10 Hoover’s chicks with the same hatch date. At 5 weeks I believe 2 are Olive eggers. The rest, I think, are Easter Eggers. Possibly some Prairie Bluebells or Starlight Green Eggers. The plan is to keep them all till they start laying. Then I’ll choose keepers based on egg color.

Our favorites are a black Silverudd’s rooster and a buff colored Easter Egger. Both are very sweet and calm. They kind of birds you can walk over when they’re free ranging and pick up.
Oh you have a selection there! Pics please!

(I know it will be awhile lol).
Some people on the Hoover’s hatchery Facebook group say their Easter or Olive eggers started laying at 16-18 weeks. That’s the last week of October at the very soonest. The good news is they also report these birds are decent winter layers. Even without supplemental lights. Hooray! :celebrate

My little helper spent time catching grasshoppers for the chickens. No wonder she is their favorite. 8D90501C-2191-413E-906C-1BA472E67FCF.jpeg A687AAB4-17F7-4CAB-8566-CF378D1F8176.jpeg

They only get to be out when I’m sitting with them. Or I can keep a close eye on them from another part of the yard. I don’t think I’ve ever had such excellent foragers! It’s so fun to watch them.

My DH kept hollering to check in me yesterday...when i finally came back inside...he said what have u been doing out there? It's nearly 96 feels like 100+ ...I said I got that fan in the run and I get to watching em all and totally lose track of any time or rest of the world!
My quiet, happy place for sure!

Can't believe they are 10 days old already! Mama is doing great with them. Started doing 1:1 meet n greets with the older hens for about 15 min at a time. Couple got mama on them but most did fine, even eating and drinking with babies! This weekend we will open up their space and let them and mama out with the rest for some integrating, they will be 2 weeks hopefully that is good.

I had to go downstairs at night after my kids gone to bed to spend sometime with them lol had to wake then up from the dark room 😂😂
My kids love spending time with them after breakfast to feed them some eggs and corn.

They are really fun to watch. I usually take them outside in an enclosed run during the day when it's nice out
