I believe it's best to always start with paper towels because It is easier to see if they are pooping and they won't be tempted to eat shavings.
They do not need a cushiony surface at this age.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you were meaning by them having issues walking or whatever.

Well, they’re not really having issues per se, they’re just still a little clumsy sometimes, but I figured that was just cause they were still brand new?

The Barred Rock seems to be better at it and he’s older so I’m hoping they’ll get it but I’ll try the paper towel thing. Maybe I can put down some cardboard or something first.

Hmm that’s a good point. I wanted them to have something soft :lau

Paper towels probably would have been better.

And they have picked at them somewhat but already seem to understand that it is not food.

Kdog a million people you shavings and their chicks are just fine.
Just leave it.

Yeah I had my last two batches on shavings right away but they were at least a day or two old by the time they got to me so I figure maybe they just need more time haha

But I do feel like I probably should have done paper towels first.

Main challenge with shavings is to keep them out of the water.....they can “wick” all the water out and flood the brooder.....that’s why I elevate my waterer when using shavings

Thanks. Good point. I usually always put it on a brick or something but for now I just put it on a tray thing.

3 more out!! Was not expecting that. Was gone for like an hour or two, none were out when I last checked, come back to 3 out. :lau
