Well if they're having trouble walking on the shavings then they're going to continue to have trouble walking on top of them.
A flat hard surface is better.
Hmm that’s a good point.. I’ll try to see if I can take some out.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you were meaning by them having issues walking or whatever.
I believe it's best to always start with paper towels because It is easier to see if they are pooping and they won't be tempted to eat shavings.
They do not need a cushiony surface at this age.
Kdog a million people you shavings and their chicks are just fine.
Just leave it.
Main challenge with shavings is to keep them out of the water.....they can “wick” all the water out and flood the brooder.....that’s why I elevate my waterer when using shavingsHmm that’s a good point. I wanted them to have something soft
Paper towels probably would have been better.
And they have picked at them somewhat but already seem to understand that it is not food.
Yeah I had my last two batches on shavings right away but they were at least a day or two old by the time they got to me so I figure maybe they just need more time haha
But I do feel like I probably should have done paper towels first.![]()
Just leave it the way it is.
They will be fine.
What's going on with the other eggs?
