Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

The Chantelacer is a Canadian meat breed, and we also eat several vegetarian meals a week :) For us it’s about balance and sustainability, as well as animal welfare. If I didn’t have access to our humanely raised meat, I’d probably be a full on vegetarian by now as well. I want all my food to be treated respectfully and not to have a huge detrimental effect on the environment. All large scale Factory farming is quite aberrant to me, from corn, soy, and almond mono-cultures to the commercial meat industry.:barnie
Apart from anything else I'm of the opinion that if you're not prepared to kill it yourself then you don't get to eat it. I'm squeamish. I prefer not to have to deal with that & am happily vegetarian. The man eats meat ~ but he was raised in a hunting & fishing family. I think a lot of farming issues have arisen because most people are no longer accountable for the food they eat. It's so different when you raise & produce it yourself & you are far more aware of the cost in real terms.

Which affects most vegetarian/vegan diets,
not to mention how most vegetables are 'produced' ;)
...but ya know, nothing 'died'.
Sorry, skeptical sarcasm slipped out.

lol Which is why I also have a veggie garden & now bees. :) OK, never going to eliminate all the negatives but even a little bit helps & @ least I have no qualms about killing a lettuce.:lau

Hey... that’s my soapbox! That’s ok though, I can share :D I’m also just a little critical of the vegetarians that don’t eat actual vegetables... pasta, twinkies and tofu fake meats does not a “vegetarian” diet make! It’s a real challenge for most to balance and maintain a vegetarian diet in a healthy way, so I also have huge respect for some vegetarians... after a decade working at whole foods I am a little jaded ;)

So I’m starting to feel very sorry for one of the production layers in with Chickie Hawk, every two or three days she lays a massive double yolker. I wear a men’s large in gloves, so I don’t have small hands. Poor dear... I just can’t imagine her pushing this out, but she does!

So here’s my Etsy whoopsie... a 5x3” stamp for the tops of cartons/paper bags etc, and a 4x2” one for the inside of the cartons, asking for return for recycle.

And my most thrilling moment of the day... completing the second meat tractor and dividing the girls (mostly I hope) from the ranger cockerels and integrating the three CX into the girls. I haven’t seen much bullying/pecking, so hopefully all goes well for the night. The CX were impressed with the grass and I’m impressed and Shanti’s (the runt) foraging ability and mobility.

There’s some bugs under that bottom rail for sure!

Today was a good day!

Yep. I explained mushrooms are a *whole food* & she should eat them to YD. She nearly had a whole bunch of kittens.:lau Easier now I'm older because my iron levels are stable ~ & I like mushrooms!:)

Ouchie...

They are really nice. :) Well chosen!

That egg is huge! Yikes! Love your stamps, too bad about them.

Morning Kris :frow Unfortunately, it's illegal here to recycle.
Morning! Pretty sure it’s not exactly “legal” to re-use them here either, not that that stops anyone. Over 50% of local egg sales are repacked in big farm cartons. It’s an accepted local practice, and as it’s a farm gate sale, less regulated than if I wanted to retail on a large level. The other farm that used to consistently sell eggs actually got a little poked fun at for ordering custom cartons to sell through our local store (they also reuse cartons;)) the smallest order I could find online was for 20,000 cartons, a full pallet, they got two pallets many years ago, and still haven’t run out! Yeah, right now I’m having enough challenges storing all my other chicken stuff... forget winter... Hay is coming!

So I’m a little sleep deprived this morning. I never sleep as well when Andrew is away, so I was up late, alone, in the deep dark of the barely moonlit night. And the chickens kept making very strange noises. Sounds like the ideal set up for a horror film... I know. It was after midnight when I finally managed to fix all the problems and we finally all got some sleep.

The CX didn’t take to outside or it being dark at night quite as well as my rangers (but they’ve been raised in a more traditional coop setting). The largest girl of the three actually ran to me when I was putting everyone up and tried to fly out of the tractor. 8 lb chickens don’t fly! (She’s ok, I helped control her fall). The CX actually honk and make goose like noises, it’s very weird. I wonder if it has to do with the two geese the other farmer keeps fairly close to them? But I digress...

So, I was up late working on the Menu for Saturday Market (pictures and prices, we’re getting classy!) and the chickens kept making sudden distressed noises. Twice I went out thinking some nasty had gotten in and was murdering my dinner/girls, but nothing... just some unsettled chickens, and a soft shelled egg in Mr Marans coop (at first I couldn’t quite figure where the problem was). Third time is the charm I suppose, because I finally spotted the culprit, the Largest Barred Owl I have seen on the island yet. I’m 90% sure it’s a Barred, but could be wrong. Sure, it wasn’t after my chickens, but the mice that come out at night to scrounge spilled feed? Tasty owl snacks and easy pickings, she was essentially hunting over bait, but spooking my girls something awful as well!

All said and done it was a long night for me. I may be a city girl, but that city had Bears and Cougars, wild dogs and coyotes, and I’ve lived in grizzly country as well. I’ve had more than 10 close encounters with black bears, and been stalked by a cougar once that I know of. There are no large predators on this island, but it’s still kind of unnerving for me, going out alone on a near moonless night armed only with my trusty shoe horn. I might buy a baseball bat next time I’m in town or put a crowbar by the door next time Andrew is away, because halfway through my second excursion I realized the absurdity of the flimsy plastic thing I took with me, (works for chickens) of course that didn’t stop me from taking it when I went out the next time! ;)
