Hi everyone! We are first time chicken owners here and have had our girls for about 9 months now. Everyone has been doing great until today. One of our hens was completely normal at noon, we went and checked on them this afternoon and she was huddled under a tree and didn’t want to come out. The picture is what was coming out of her vent.
We googled and it said gently pull it out, so we did. But she is still not walking around and is obviously uncomfortable.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated on how to make our hen feel better! Thanks!

Welcome.

What exactly fo you feed your flock?

Do you have pictures of everything you pulled out?

Hi @Kiki!

Their feed is “Home Fresh” Extra Egg Layer. They have oyster shell and Dumor grit out for them to eat as they choose. And they get Dumor 5 grain scratch as treats. They are also free range so they have access to the yard all day.

I have attached a picture of what we pulled out.The insides of it look like egg whites (you can kind of see in the picture).

Thanks.

I'd stop feeding all treats and feed ONLY the complete balanced feed and hope this doesn't happen again.

Can you compare her belly area's feel to another girl?

See if hers feels bigger, squishier or firmer.

Welcome To BYC!

That looks like a soft shell membrane, but quite long. Did she expel that? Can you get some more photos of that and of her poop?

Expelling a membrane can be difficult and it makes them feel bad at times. Let us know how she's doing.

Hey everyone! She is doing great. That was quite a while ago but thought I’d follow up in case anyone else sees this post. She recovered fully and was good to go the next day. We did restrict food and isolate her for the rest of the day and night after that and then she was back to normal the next day!
