Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

Glad to see ya again Pete! I'm still sending buff baby vibes your way! Got a quick question for ya.... I'm not having the best of luck this season. So far, out of six eggs I've hatched 3 goslings. The first one died after hatch (that was my very first post-hatch death for a gosling...I cried like a big ol baby). In the second group/hatch, there were two eggs..one hatched successfully and one died before internally pipping. In this last group/hatch, there were three eggs, one literally pushed itself free about an hour ago but the other two died before internally pipping. I can't help but think it's something with the humidity because they aren't losing enough weight. In all of the one's that didn't make it, I could never get the air cells to do that massive drop down that they do at around 27 days or so. I can't figure it out though because my call duck eggs are doing what they're supposed to and three of the goose eggs did, so why am I not seeing it in all of them? When I opened them up, one of the goslings was in the wrong position (it was a really big baby and I don't think it could get turned around) but the other two were in the correct position but had a LOT of yolk left to absorb and had quite a bit of fluid in there with them. Is it just the luck of the draw sort of thing or would you drop the humidity even lower? I run a dry bator and humidity is averaging at around 27%-28%. The hubby's picking me up another oscillating fan and I'm going to put that on them and see if it'll drop my humidity a bit more. I don't want to get it too low but I think if I can get it down to say....20% -25% it might help. What do you think?

Hi. What temp are you at? I would recommend 37.3C. The problem does sound like they're not llosing sufficient moisture and achieving a 16% weight loss. You can help this by daily cooling. Also keep your humidity around 25% and incubator air flow to max.

All lots of lovely babies and every one of them so cute.

Good luck with your eggs over the weekend Iain

I SOOOOOOO HOPE I can get some of those eggs before it's too late!

I have one African egg (brown female, possibly bred to white gander) and 3 duck eggs in lockdown this week. I have 6 eggs growing nicely between days 7-14 with my select dewlap trio and 4 more eggs to set tomorrow.

They are laying daily (both girls alternating days) and have laid approximately 10 eggs each. They are still in breeding mode and not going broody so I hope they will keep laying for a couple more weeks.

Generally I've found yearly females will lay about 12 to 15 eggs so time yet for more. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that you get those baby buffs.

I have so many staggered hatches

I have a dry erase month calender board to keep track of settings, lockdowns, and hatch days

Thats why I use those pellet stove pellets ! They keep the mess down, and just shift pellets daily in their brooder

Darn dogs think our birds are yummy

Are you going to keep the ducklings? If so it will be interesting to see them in 5 months

I have 2 drakes

Yep...that's just what I thought you'd say! I'm telling ya, I take a refresher course every year with your hatching guide.... Temp is factory set at 100F but generally runs between 99.5F and 100.1F. Both vents are always open and my humidity runs between 26% and 28%, rarely does it ever reach 30%. I always do my daily cooling and misting but on these I do it twice a day instead of once. I'll put the fan on it tonight when hubby gets home with it and see if that helps bring it down a little. I sure hope that fixes it because my girls are nearly done for the season!!! :barnie

On a happier note...gosling #2 is out and seems to be doing great so far! I'll try and get some pics of the two together after he finds his feet. ;)

Our last Sebbie to start.. laid her first egg today! Yay! So 7 geese a-laying and 18 for the bator tonight. Louis (Buff Dewlap Gander) is finding his attitude

so hopefully that will translate into some fertile eggs.
