Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

It took me over an hour to catch up on this thread! Just keeps moving right along!

So sorry so many eggs have been taken out upon candling. When I candle late tomorrow night I imagine I'll be pulling a few more... it's just the nature of the beast.

Oh and Kathy, I know you figured I'd give you a bad time about road kill and coon cuisine originating in MO and all, but I was thinking that perhaps it is also the fault of the wonderful folks from MO that airlines only allow two carrions per passenger.

With apologies to the younger folk in the hatch, I see posts all of the time here on BYC where folks ask what this acronym or that acronyn means, well since I'm just on the long side of two years before I can get a senior discount on a meal at the local Denny's, here is an alphabetical listing of the all new acronyms for Seniors, those of us of the baby boom generation who are getting puter savy and for those of us who are finally getting into texting and tweeting.

Guess we've had a couple of first posts on the NYDH thread!!!

I would think it's possible for them to be rocking this soon. We are down to the last 111 hours of the hatch..

almost 4/5ths of the way there.

Hi! Mine are... they are still in the egg turner!
It's possible they are twitching the eggs. I've never noticed it til Day 18, and the eggs set the 11th are on Day 16?
They are alive, for sure!! Good job!

Woohoo!

Kathy, I didn't know you were a nurse. Very cool!

So my grandma told me to try leaving the eggs in the nesting box to encourage a hen to go broody.

Has anybody else tried this method?

I am hoping my sweet-tempered freeloading cull will take the bait and not one of the 5 layers!

I worry this could encourage egg-eating, but the girls are pretty well behaved and don't even touch the odd broken egg.

I really need to go to town and get chick starter. I'm sick and hubby is worse than me. I guess in a pinch, I can give them some flockraiser until I get to town.

The downside of living 15 miles out of town......

Most incubators recommend 58-60% or
84-86 degrees between setting the eggs and 3 days prior to hatching. Then you would increase
to 65% during the hatching process.

OK, so that is what I read when I started this process, so I've kept my humidity between 55 and 60 this entire time. I've seen posts on this thread saying 30% and up to 60% for lockdown, but no more than 80. OK, I'm safe with under 80, but have I had my humidity up too high? Is this a personal preference kind of thing?
