I can't wait to see how it all turns out. I love the creative solutions part of chicken ownership. Please share what you do along the way.
I started using sand in the coop under the roosts.. and I LOVE it! It is so easy to clean everyday.. takes three minutes to scoop and dump..

:lau So true! And it is nice! Cuz i thought she might hate me too so now i know she likes me and accepts me :D :love

She doesn’t just accept you, you (and ONLY you) are a trusted vital partner to her. When you think that serving others is what makes life rewarding, what better feeling can there be then knowing that this hen has made you a vital part of her existennce?

Now having said that, you really need to get her to share that trust with others otherwise yesterday will continue.

I am going to follow this. I am a straw guy right now and I compost everything and turn it into fresh garden soil but maybe there is an application for this sand method. Not saying I’m converting but I will be watching to see how this goes.

I do throw it into the compost.. some sand sticks to the poop so you will have a little sand in your compost.. don’t know if that matters or not ... if it affects the composting at all.. I don’t know...
It doesn’t matter to me.. I was using deep litter before and was finding it hard to keep fresh and smelling nice... especially with our hot humid weather! Plus, I found that left tons of hiding places for mosquitoes.. whereas with the sand.. not so much. I also have cats so I am very aquatinted with “scooping”... and the chicken poop is MUCH easier to scoop!! :D

Totally agree!!
Yes I'm going to have the boys start luring her to the coop with mealworms... every chickens weakness! Hoping that helps :D

This is the truth!! It easier! All poo and shavings and such all go to one spot on our property since we have so much. I have a compost bin and add as needed. But otherwise I just leave be so the new sand stuff just melds into the old now
