March Hatch-A-Long

Well I needn't have worried all of a sudden this one decided to hatch

and two with their mummy

From the 5 shipped Blue Birchen Marans eggs that made it to lock down, I now have 3 chicks in blue, black and splash. That's pretty cool! A 4th chick is trying to zip. It's day 22 here. The 2 "older" upside down chicks are picking on their newest sibling and generally acting drunk and angry, except when they pass out suddenly as if from narcolepsy. I may move them to the brooder tonight.

Did a quick candling and yeah air cells all grew but not seeing any movement or evidence of life, removed 4 that were definitely not looking right of the eggs and will turn off the incubator tomorrow evening if none of the eggs candling better, pip or hatch.
So, looks like 4 is going to be it. Ah well, will have to try again for more bresse and maybe swedes if this one grows well. We shall see. Need to decide soon. Getting warm for shipping eggs. ugh I hate buying shipped eggs.

Congratulations on your four and better luck next time. Calculate what you spent vs what you got and consider whether or not it's better just to buy chicks. Many sellers offer a live arrival guarantee. If my eggs had failed I had decided in advance to bite the bullet and pay for chicks. I do like hatching eggs, but it's so more fun when hatch rates are good.

Oh geez, now I see why the other two are picking on this one. I was like so what if he has toes, so do you. Now I see that he has an extra little claw growing out of one of them. It's so tiny, but chicks notice any difference. I hope the feathers will cover it up.

It a minimum order thing. This 4 chicks cost me $31 each. Live chicks will cost $35 each plus shipping and I have to order more than I need.
So either way sucks.

Hmmm, I think the FB group run by Gold Feather Farms auctions Bresse chicks in lots of 6 with $35 shipping. They might have Swedish Flower Hens too. That's how I would try to get them because there are deals to be had. I won my 6 Bresse eggs from them for $25 shipped, but then I had a 0% hatch. Rare Breed Auctions has those breeds too, directly from Greenfire Farms but often at discounted prices. I hope you post more pics of your chicks. Such great breeds!
