Mildred and Bumblefoot

Hopeful smile. I just went in and changed the bandage. There is no swelling at all on the top or bottom of her foot. No scab, just a healing incision where I cut her open. She's fooled me before, but I am hopeful. And she is just plain ornery! Eating, biting (I deserve it), and seems much improved. Had really packed the neosporin in the wound early in the week. Got some iodine. She got a half hour soak in epson salts tonight.

It looks so much better - after being convinced there was absolutely no hope earlier in the week. Maybe?

Just worried that the infection has been in her system too long. But maybe?

Keeping my Bag Balm handy anytime I see the slightest thing on anyone's feet!!!!

I'm so happy Mildred is showing improvement!

I do monthly foot checks. I'm paranoid.

Hope he's okay! I am paranoid about duck feet now....everybody gets inspected every night. Amazes me how fast they can get a real problem!

I am so happy to hear Mildred is doing so good, Lets hope and pray she continues going in the right direction now, as for my boy, he will be getting soaks everyday and vetericyn spray and Alushield, which I am not very pleased with it's suppose to be a spray bandage but by morning it's gone. won't spend 12.00 on that stuff again. He's a big ol boy and has been walking on rocky ground all his life going on 9 years, and this is the first time he has had feet problems..

he's such a sweet boy.. anyway very happy for you and Mildred..

Mildred even ate peas out of my hand this morning. Something she has never done before. The only one of my six ducks that just refuses to eat out of my hand. But she loves her peas!

It was only temporary. She's worse again this morning. Tried to take her out and put her in the newly cleaned duck house with a buddy, because she's been in the kennel inside all week and really unhappy. She went on a biting frenzy, got away from me, and went straight into the pond (which was a couple hundred feet away....didn't know she could move that fast). I let the other ducks out. She gets some quality time with her buddies. Yes, I know the pond is a bad idea. But considering this is just not getting better, she needs a little quality of life as well. I will bring her back in after a few minutes and do the epsom salt iodine soak, neosporin, etc. But for a few minutes, she gets to be a ducks with her buddies. I don't think it's going to make any drastic difference in the outcome except to make her a little happier for the remaining time she has.

We are still pulling for you two! Who knows the ways of nature? Maybe the gunk in the pond will have some healing properties and clean her foot out naturally....

Mildred is becoming a county music fan.. Turned on the radio for her since she is in 'sick bay' by herself. Needed to drown out the barking dogs, beeping motion detectors, pouring rain, and blowing wind - too bad I don't have a recording of quacking ducks. Foot looks a little better today, but not much. It's had the first of it's soakings, medicating, and bandaging for the day. One more before bed tonight. She spent the day yesterday in the duck house with her favorite drake Ciscoe, and came back to 'sick bay' (dog kennel on a table in the unused dining room) when everyone went to bed. She seriously hates it in sick bay. The radio is on, I go in to check on her and talk to her, but it's lonely for a poor little duck.

Well at least she enjoys music.. I'm sorry she isn't doing much better, seems if this infection was through her body she would be alot sicker, Just keep up those soaks and hopefully it will pay off. I bet she was happy to be with her flock for a while. your a good ducky mama.

I could probably answer your question:
Long ago I had a hen with bumblefoot. Paid alot of $ & she died anyway. cheesy stuff.
Lately I've had a problem with two heavy breed hens: orpington & brahma. Looks like bumblefoot ON TOP OF FOOT!
If you look under the foot you might find some very hard pieces of what look like dirt. Pick them off. I have found that feces actually works it's way THROUGH THE FOOT & out the top! I just finished 3 days of picking at my brahma & finally got it out through the bottom! you are left with a hole but pack it with antibiotic cream. I will now keep an eye on big birds.
