The op didn't say what breed of chickens they had. Bantams might not be a hardy in the cold as large fowl and heavy breeds. Light breeds might not be able to withstand the cold.

My flock consists of banties and they do just fine. I don't add heat and none of the locals I've spoken to have added heat either. If allowed to acclimate they will grow grow plenty of down and fathers to stay warm.
