Nevadans?

re: shortbread dough for chickens (all that butter)

Just an educated guess, but suet and butter are probably pretty closely related foodstuffs. My suggestion would be to mash the dough with a whole bunch of scratch, seeds, etc. and make a suet-ball type of substance and feed accordingly.

I decided to change my avatar since everyone else did. It was getting pretty long in the tooth anyway.

Things I never thought I'd say before I had chickens...
I have one really spoiled hen out there who just needs to shut up and admit that I'm too busy to let her out of her coop today. I went out to see if the water had frozen, but no. Delawares are apparently a really smart breed, and if you give her a privilege once, she expects it. She just figured she deserved to be out, and she wasn't going to shut up until I opened the gate.

But then, the weirdest one was when Rotisserie was 6 weeks and got injured pretty badly. I thought she was sick, and didn't want to lose my whole flock, so I went to the vet, where he discovered that she had a cut on the joint of her leg and had lost a lot of blood. (Her name got changed to Gourmet after paying the vet bill.) So we brought her home, lined the bathtub with towels, and showered in the other bathroom for a week. She recovered fast, and started jumping out of the tub within about 4 days. I realized how crazy I was starting to sound when I told my family,

"Keep the toilet closed. The chicken's feeling better."

Other moms think they're crazy when they have to advise people several times a day to keep wearing pants and not put things up their nose.

Anyone else?

Yea I have considered the grading before, but since I'm just selling eggs within the community I decided it would be fine. If I ever started selling them at an actual store it would all have to be federally graded/inspected. I am hoping to get to that point someday, where I'm selling eggs in the stores here in Elko

You don't need federal inspection if you are producing and selling in the same state. You only need that if you sell across state lines. However, to sell in stores you would need to follow state guidelines, similar to what I outlined above. You only have to submit random samples to the state to verify that your grading procedures are correct.

What's that a pic of Ron?

I'm not happy with my latest avatar but I would need a huge photo shoot at the beach or on a rocky hillside in a forest and some artistic props to start shooting the pics I'd like. I see mystic looking models with huge swaths of filmy material and the results would be over painted for a softer look and treated with an aging technique to make the pics look really old. No young trendy looking models I want faces that speak of many stories.

Hoo boy I think I've been ignoring my creative side too long! I better find time for this stuff soon!

I was confused for a minute when I saw that avatar lol. I only changed mine since I'm not even raising hogs anymore

Haha I knew someone would ask me about that! That is the "Fatman" atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki at the end of WWII. Fatman because I'm - ahem - a little overweight

, but I'm also "Da Bomb"!

ETA: Oops! Just saw Dee's reply; I was hoping someone would get it!

Kathy, I'm so sorry about your hen. It really stinks when this stuff happens. Believe me I understand.

Seth - If you notice on my post the last line I wrote this website does not work? But no, you just had to try it anyways.

I called the phone number and got an answering machine and it said if I wanted to talk to a live person to call 722-6437 and talk to Robin. Well I called the number and got a voicemail saying she was busy to leave a message. I left a message on Robin's phone to have her call me back.

I'll let everyone know what I find out.

I'm not sure about only being able to cook in certified kitchens though, I mean with the Rib Cook-off every year you see them grilling after smoking ribs and the roasted peppers were the same idea there. I believe it's only for packaged foods like breads and stuff. I need to look into it more.

I was thinking about my eggs and I have a wait list already for them with people who are buying them, I just don't know if I'll have enough to sell at the Farmer's Markets too? I do know the Marans eggs would be $8 per dozen minimum and $10 per dozen maximum.

I went on the website that you posted Ron and I've been there before. They have so much good stuff. I need to get duck egg cartons to sell my duck eggs. Perhaps I should get some now before they start laying.

I know Sierra is getting ready to lay, I found her 3 feet up into the coop this morning checking it out, don't ask me how she managed to get up there because I have no clue at all. She walked down the ramp just like a chicken and when she got close to the bottom she jumped off the ramp just like a chicken. I'm guessing she jumped up onto the ramp from watching the chickens do it. We had to teach the ducks to jump over things instead of plowing into them. It took 2 weeks to train them to jump but now they jump onto the deck without any issues so she must have jumped up the ramp which is lower than the deck.

hmm, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the info Ron! I am nowhere near selling in the stores, but Now I'll know for when I (hopefully) eventually get there!
