I'm hoping he'll come back and update. He hasn't been on in a month.
Lots of predators can climb or fly up even if the chicks didn't fall to their death. Opossums, raccoons, squirrels, hawks, owls... I'm positive this didn't end well.
Yep, looks like this is the only thread he ever posted in, and hasn’t been back.He hasn't been on in a month.

Sorry I haven't been able to get in awhile. The takeaway from this hen trying to set in a squirrel nest is as follows:I'm hoping he'll come back and update.
There are many things that COULD go wrong, but I'm curious what he can tell about whether they DID go wrong.
Thanks for the update. It's sad the nest fell, but the rotten eggs might of been for the better. No worries on how any chicks were going to get down.Sorry I haven't been able to get in awhile. The takeaway from this hen trying to set in a squirrel nest is as follows:
1.It's along way up and down to the nest!
2.Squrrils fix and maintain their nest not really possible for a hen in that circumstance.
3.The temp. Is alot harder for a hen to regulate without a solid bottom.
She didn't hatch any. In fact a few days after my last post, we got a storm! Blew the nest down. Every egg that hit the ground was rotten. I think she may have learned from it. She is setting again in a plastic barrel just above ground level. Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate it.
