I started out with a reg plastic chick waterer when my duckling first hatched then moved to these by week two and then graduated to a deeper one before they moved outside these are easy to make and if you can find an old broiler pan just put the container on top of it that will help even more.

Aren’t they just the cutest?! I’m already in love with the tiny things! All were well last night; mother hen took to them instantly yesterday morning and they took to her well enough to sit under her when cold (even if they don’t come to her calling to them yet). My lavender ameraucana chick that just got over a bout of wry neck decided to hang out with them and after a couple of them chased her a few times, she began hanging around them and pecking at the grass in a manner similar to them! We just had some very severe storms pass through and I’m waiting for everything to calm down and the rain to stop so I can go check on them... hoping profusely all is well. :fl

That is so precious. Looks like mama is watching over them. Love the lil chick there among them!
Mama is doing great for it to be her first time! She’s watching them closely and has been up and about, even sitting through another storm under a tree with them under her. And that chick ended up leading the other 11 to them tonight and they took mama from the ducklings! She apparently is willing to sit on anything that peeps and moves :lau

Well, four went to one rapidly over the course of a week and a half. The smaller yellow one wandered off from Henrietta and it was a little off in the head I think, it acted funny. That happened three or four days after I got them. Then while I was on vacation last week, another one disappeared and never showed back up. Day before yesterday, after I had already interacted with them and made sure the last two were safely with mother hen, the third disappeared and has never been heard from again. Naturally I am wary of letting Henrietta out with the last one, as I don’t think she’s caring for them very well (she leaves them unattended quite a bit when treats are being given or when she’s eating), so she and Houdini (it escapes ALL THE TIME) are residing in the XL dog cage I have for brooding chicks. I’m going to look into getting mid size-adult ducks once Houdini gets a bit bigger for companionship since I know ducks are social creatures. I’ll post a pic of him/her shortly!

Houdini is still safe. His/her mother Henrietta has gone missing though :( something is picking off my flock members one by one :he:barnie I don’t know what it is or how to stop it! I go out of state on Monday and won’t be back until next Saturday, and my state is on the brink of the worst heat wave of the summer. They free range and I don’t have a run set up/can’t build one in two days that will contain 35 chickens and one duckling.
